I noticed that as well. In an interview with Nick on the dvd extras he says her skin and eyes were like that because she was in her cell all day everyday. So she never went outside in the sun, thats why she looked like that.
I must admit at first I thought someone had been beating her up, she really looked like she'd had two black eyes.

Im not a religious man, nor am i superstitious. But looking into her eyes in this film was like staring directly at the devil.... her eyes are deffinately the windows of hell. Very very creepy!!

I agree with you, Vetch. If anything, this woman was severly mentally unbalanced and lived the majority of her life surrounded by violence. What you're seeing in her eyes is probably rage and illness. It's easy to turn someone who does monstrous things into a "monster" so that we can more easily remove ourselves from what we see that bothers us, but the truth is she's just a very damaged and tortured person. No one is immune to becoming that given the right circumstances.

I am not sure if discussing her bad childhood and traumatic experiences in context with the person she became is being an apologist or looking at the big picture.
I agree she became evil and demented and the longer she was locked up and kept herself in isolation by choice the more her demons took her over. However I also agree that she is a product of our sick society in certain areas, her own horrific parents, ineffective school systems, and whatever else added up to the sum total of a very f-ed up person with, indeed, frightening as hell eyes.

I don't know how to define evil, so I won't call here evil. She was just a very screwed up woman who had been dicked around and decided to strike back. Not that what she did was in the least bit right. However 'if' she did get raped and then shot her assailant; then she did the right thing(not legally but that's just my view). However if the motive for the shootings was robbery or hatred of society then she did the wrong thing morally(my morals) and legally.

You can tell a lot about a person from their eyes. She legit straight-up SCARED me when she freaks out and stares right into the camera while shouting. Those were shark eyes. Those were dead eyes, too. She was dead long before they stuck the needle in her.

I think that sentence sums up her life.

Her friend reminisced about how Aileen was insulted by everyone while she was growing up. I think that they did such a good job treating her like a monster, that she decided that she may as well act like one.

I think Aileen suffered from a condition called aniridia in which the pigmentation of the iris is almost as dark as the pupil, giving a shark like impression (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aniridia). That and Aileen's otherwise intense and paranoid gaze would make her look "evil".

It's interesting that many people who are criminally insane or "evil" often have those kind of eyes: penetrating but "dead", intense, hypnotic, etc. Adolf Hitler, Aleister Crowley and Charles Manson are other infamous examples.

People say that I and one of my twin daughters have these eyes. People get scared when you piss us off.

The other thing about her eyes is, like Princess Diana, the pupil/iris arrangement leaves space above and below. In other words, there is a full circle standing out against the white of the eyes. This is pretty rare.

LOL but her adoptive mother said (in the other AW documentary) that Aileen's beautiful, kind eyes are what told her Aileen was innocent! "I read people's eyes" she said. Talk about Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs & Nutter Butters.
