Original ending : reality or hoax ?

What's with all this "original ending" stuff ? I read somewhere that the whole thing is actually a joke by the director (which strikes me as believable, as the concept of that original ending seems awfully counter-productive to me). Does anyone have some info about this ?

reply

The "original ending" starts when Peter La Fleur gets hit by White Goodman's ball. But instead of White's ball being out of bounds because he stepped on the line (as on the movie), his shot is good and the Globo Gym Purple Cobras win the tournament and credits roll... Movie ends.... Hilarious

reply

hilarious? That would have sucked. No wonder it failed the screening test. I mean I don't mind seeing the bad guy win, but not if the bad guy is as obnoxious as White Goodman was. as funny as he was, he was friggin obnoxious. definitely a guy who needed to get what was coming to him.

reply

Am glad that white did not win since his arrogance and greed would be his downfall.

reply

Oh you are one of those people that get easily bothered by original ideas. Bad guy wins, thats a no go in your book. Life is not like that, the original ending shows you how it is which makes it even more funny and daring. Open your mind you hillbilly

reply

yes people like this make movies so boring. one of my favorite movie was The Toxic Avenger it is the most crazy movie especially compared to all the gay super hero shit they are making. that movie broke all the rules, not even chrildren or dogs are off limits

reply

if you watch it with the commentary the director says that 'artistically' this ending was right... everyone loved it apart from the studio... how he walked off the movie because the studio wanted to change it (after it failed test screenings) etc.,
A 'true underdog story' with the underdogs losing???!!!
Of course it's a joke.

I haven't seen it in ages but didn't the "good guys" lose at the end of Bad News Bears?

Ever seen Rocky? The best underdog story of all time?

reply

lol that's funny! :) Obviously not real because we didn't see White gloat over his victory and the AJ's guys lose their gym.

I loved the "alternate" ending. I wish they had kept it. If I had seen it in the theaters like that, I might have felt a little jipped, but I would have died laughing all the way home.

reply

C'mon this is a DVD that has a commentary featuring 30+ mins on in-fighting between the cast then the track from Something about Mary is put on instead

I really really have a hard time believing the original ending was actually considered because it's a friggin comedy and the fact that, that ending would have resulted in several storylines being half finished

reply

It's just a different kind of humor. The storylines WERE finished. It just portrayed them differently than everyone would expect. We're shown a team that we get to know, feel for, and follow their attempt at victory and everything they went through, and WHAM, they lose. Not only do they lose, but the enemy team's victory is portrayed as the happy ending and the movie is over.
Storylines finished. They just didn't win their gym back.

I think its downright hilarious.

reply

I think the general movie going population would not enjoy the ending. It would not have made money. Therefore... the ending had to come out the way it did.

It seemed fake. A real alternate ending would have Goodman gloating a lot more than just him cheering with his team like in the movie, then a sudden cut to black.

You can tell. If they wanted a more believable alternate ending they would have filmed Stiller laughing in Vince's face and more reactions.

reply

Any new info on this? The actual ending is kind of typical hollywood ending I guess, but the alternative(in fact the original) ending is a bit too sudden and not so funny either. Maybe unique in some kind of way but still..

This is Portland, Oregon, God damnit! Can't you feel the darkness!??

reply

I don't agree. I think when you have an ending like this, you have to pull the rug out from everyone quickly, and then turn the lights off before anyone knows what happened.

If they started going in to Goodman laughing at him and gloating, the joke would have died and ruined the whole thing.

reply

the ending for that episode is one of the best ever put on T.V. you're dead wrong on its execution being poor. however, this climax would have been way more of a "*beep* you" to the audience, as they paid money to see something that by all rights should have been formulaic as it was (south park is not known for its following the "rules"), and instead get this blow to the gut. it would have been awesome to see in theaters, ill give you that.

reply

What are you talking about? By the time you see the ending, you already paid for the movie, so you can't say it would make no money! And I know for sure what most people would do afterwards: They would tell their friends "Hey, watch Dodgeball, it's a funny movie and the ending TOTALLY KICKS ASS!!" without telling what the ending is like! At least that's what I would do.

reply

In my opinion it was clearly a joke. The 'original' ending fits along perfectly with the 'real' commentary track. They were having fun with the format and threw it out there to see how many people would bite. Apparently there were quite a few.

The original ending was better. The final cut was to contrived.

The alternate ending was clearly a joke. Leaving Steve the pirate wandering aimlessly in Vegas would just be terrible story telling. Granted this is not Oscar material but I could not imagine them making such a terrible mistake. That is a major hole in the film. Anyone that believes this ending was intended is an idiot!

reply

Yep, a joke ending. Just a jab at alternate endings in general. This one showed the worst possible outcome as if it's a happy ending, with that slow motion celebration of Goodman's team, as if they were the heroes of the movie. Yeah, clearly a joke. (Leaving Steve the Pirate without a suitable resolution, and everyone else too, would not happen, you're right.)

reply

It's a joke! Otherwise we wouldn't get White's hilariously weird sweet muffin remark, no Stiller milkshake dance in fat suit, no resolution for Steve, no bisexual revelation, no quip from White about Chuck Norris etc. Not to mention Dwight and Gordon have a conversation earlier in the casino about a double fault which sets up the finale. What's funnier, it's inclusion on the DVD or how many people not only fell for it and some even using it as a basis for artistic integrity? Now that is damn funny.

reply

That would have been a terrible ending. The actual ending is much better, although Ben Stiller in the "Fat Bastard" suit is kind of goofy. Seems like that was supposed to set up a sequel.
