2.Baby Cart at the River Styx
3.Lady Snowblood
4.Yojimbo
5.Kill Bill vol.1 (if you have seen the house of blue leaves in glorious colour you would understand)
How do you classify Kill Bill as a samurai movie? 'Cause it has katanas in it? So does Matrix Reloaded, does that count?
shareNo, but it does have 'samurai' in it, which, at least for me, justifies the title 'samurai movie.'
share1) Seven Samurai
2) Goyokin
3) Zatôichi (2003)
4) Yojimbo
5) Kagemusha
If ANYTHING (and I wouldnt even go so far as to say this) it's more of a ninja movie than a samurai movie. If not just for the presence of Sonny Chiba's Hattori Hanzo (who was a REAL ninja, circa 1700s I think), then for some of the swordfighting that seems more ninja-esque than samurai inspired. And also he various uses of Haragei-like techinique. But I wouldnt go so far as to say anything in this movie REALLY implies ninjutsu as source material.
The second movie has a lot more to do with spagetti western and Yuen Wo Ping style Hong-Kong cinema than japanese samurai or ninja movies.
Just to make this clear, samurai was the name given to feudal japanese formal army men, versed in the various arts of war, which included, among others, lancers, archers, spies (shinobi, or ninja) and, of course, swordsmen.
shareThe real Hattori Hanzo was born in 1541. And you're right, Kill Bill's more of a spaghetti Western. Actually, Tarantino has said in an interview that Kil Bill Vol 1 and 2 has elements of various types of film he wanted to make, all wrapped up in one. Or two. Whatever, you get the point.
shareWhat about JP Melville's Le Samouraï?
«You're a killer.»
«Partly. I'm a cop.»
Agreed, although she is not a samurai when we meet her anymore, she is a ronin, bent on killing her former master no less, a crime punishable by death of your whole family and everyone you have ever associated with by the most horrible of deaths, that by invisible ninja, in feudal Japan (not so far back really, ended only about 150 years ago). So Bill, according to Japan's samurai law, was really in the right when he "murdered" her, and she was completely in the wrong throughout the film. Of course, the "rules" the Shoguns imposed on the populace were ridiculous, including the above, so she was in the wrong only as far as "law" was concerned, not morals or ethics.
The film is also a kung fu film, it can be classified as many types of films, why argue, you either are able to accept differences in film-makers styles and like something, or you are bent on some idea on what something should be like and you don't give anything a chance (make a movie yourself in that case).
"You were assimilated, resistance was futile!"
If you mean that it must be Japanese made to be a samurai movie, or that it must be from the samurai time period, then you're right, but otherwise, Kill Bill is all samurai movie, as the protagonist is an expert, a true trained samurai, and now a ronin. What more could you ask for? Oh, have I mentioned that it is full of samurai lore and battles with proper samurai techniques?
If Quinton did anything right, it is with Kill Bill, he really does pay incredible homage to samurai movies from the past, and present, coming from Japan, and I know plenty of Japanese who are blown away by Kill Bill, especially Vol 1.
"You were assimilated, resistance was futile!"
1. Seven Samurai
2. Zatoichi
3. Yojimbo
4. Sanjuro
5. haven't seen a fifth one on the level of these four
I like Sanjuro more than I like Yojimbo, even though the latter has Nakadai Tatsuya as the craaazy gunman.
«You're a killer.»
«Partly. I'm a cop.»
1. Seven Samurai
2. Zatoichi and the One Armed Swordsman
3. Kill Bill: Volume 1
4. Babycart at the River Styx
5. Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld
Seven Samurai
Ran
Throne of Blood
Sanjuro
Yojimbo
yeah, I don't think Kill Bill is really a samurai movie...
Don't want to list any samurai movies but one....my fav...
Sword of Doom
Seven Samurai
Yagru Conspiracy
Lone Wolf and Cub
Yojimbo
Samurai Assassin
Sword of Doom, man you don't hear that one everyday I thought I had the only copy. Cool movie but it ends a little abruptly. Toshiro Mifune or his student should have killed the main character.
"Don't tell me what I can do, or I'll have my mustache eat your beard."
Another vote for Sword of Doom. Tatsuya Nakadai's character is one of the most memorable villains I've ever seen on film. Director Okamoto's Samurai Assassin is, of course, also very good.
Of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies my favourite is #3, Baby Cart to Hades.
Top 5? Weelll...
Yojimbo
Harakiri
Throne of Blood
Sword of Doom
Baby Cart to Hades
1) The Seven Samurai
2) Shogun Assassin
3) Yojimbo
4) Sanjuro
5) The 47 Ronin
Also loving Sword of Doom and all the Baby Carts
Shogun Assassin? Are we talking about the dubbed re-edited version of the first two Lone Wolf movies?
shareSadly, the only Samurai movie I've seen is The Last Samurai.
shareIf anything, that should have made you want to check out some real Japanese samurai movies, but it did not? If you were not intrigued by the film at all, you won't like samurai movies much. Although The Last Samurai is nothing like the samurai movies we're discussing here, if you can't appreciate the culture and what it means to be a samurai or at least the setting and time period, then just ignore the genre.
"You were assimilated, resistance was futile!"
Yup, we are indeed talking about the same thing.
Look, I know from a purists standpoint I should probably be strung up by my thumbs, but I can't get enough of this flic.
Maybe it's the awesome dubbing.
Maybe it's the hilarious Goblin-ripped-off-first-days-of-synthesizer soundtrack.
Maybe it's all the blood flowing.
Maybe I'm on crack.
But it's cool and I dig it.
Of course, I'm the kind of guy that thinks Chinese Super Ninjas is the height of cinema excellence.
Shogun Assassin is a butchering of the classic Lone Wolf series. There isn't "more blood," it simply appears this way because the violence isn't as spaced out as the originals. If anything, there's actually more blood and violence in the original two films.
The dubbing is awful, by the way. I tend to think that dialogue that is dubbed ruins the effect of the film completely.
I disagree, while I hate dubbed films and usually refuse to watch them, Shogun Assassin seems to be an exception to that rule, if for nothing else then for the kid who does the voice-over. I've seen the Japanese version and actually prefer the dub, which is very odd for me indeed. I'm thankful I gave the dubbed version a chance, and it was due to Kill Bill that I did, since before that I only watched it in Japanese and it took me a while to realize that when she was watching it that the kid talking was actually the voice over from Shogun Assassin.
And as far as butchering the originals, I have no idea how you can say that, unless you're some sort of purist that cannot watch something for what it is and must compare details. Can you not just watch it as if it was made for itself and forget about the Lone Wolf while watching? Just watch it for the film itself, I know it's hard for some people, I have this ability, I don't compare at all, not to books, not to older movies, not to anything, I just watch films for the individual pieces of expression that they are, and I find it works wonders for me.
"You were assimilated, resistance was futile!"
Shogun assasin rocked so hard, how dare you subtly put it down.
More blood, awesome dubbing, no cart machine gun... even though that was cool, it was kind of lame, I'd like to see him chop up 20 guys rather than shoot them.
I agree. In this post I did not see it entered enough and was starting to think it's looked down on.
Most of the movies mentioned are from more of a purist stand point.
However, in it's pace, style, story telling and action I have not seen anything that comes remotely close. I don't know why they have not remastered it for Blu-Ray yet.
"Only a numbskull thinks he knows things about things he knows nothing about."
I don´t think that Ran is a Samurai movie?

Anybody seen Samurai Fiction? Not the greatest...but pretty good for an MTV(Japan) music video director.
"Say what you want about America, but 13 bucks sure can buy you a hell of a lot of mice."
I myself consider Lone Wolf 3&5 the best of the series, as for the rest i'll write a list later
shareI've seen Samurai Fiction... it first it was kind of slow and confusing, but once I started to figure out who is who and what the hell was going on I really started to enjoy it. I think it's one of those movies I'll enjoy even more the second time around. It's a strange flick overall.
shareI've seen Samurai Fiction. I thought it was pretty good. I'd say it's one of my fav samurai movies, along with some of the Zatoichi ones (haven't seen this new one yet). I can't think of any other at the moment
shareI think Samurai Fiction is really good! Not in my top five but a beautiful homage to the great films. My five (today, subject to change, not in any particular order):
Seven Samurai (of course!)
Chushingura (Inagaki 1962) (actually one of my top five films of any genre)
Miyamoto Musashi (Inagaki 1954-56) (for me, the whole trilogy counts as one film)
Throne of Blood
Seppuku (aka Harakiri, Kobayashi, 1962)
Honorable mention:
Rashomon
Sanjuro
Sword of Doom
Yojimbo
Zatoichi (2003)
Hidden Fortress
Actually, Ghost Dog is a Samurai movie. At least the main character sees himself as a Samurai.
shareWhere's the greatest ever?
SIX STRING SAMURAI
That's not a Samurai film.
shareSeven Samurai
Sanjuro
Yojimbo
Ran
Zatoichi(Beat Takeshi)
I just noticed that Lone Wolf is being remade:
Lone Wolf and Cub (2004)

haha good one
shareSadly I haven't seen alot of samurai flicks but I'm pretty sure The Twilight Samurai should be on any top 5 list. It's an awesome film with incredible character and great rythme
shareWow, I thought I was the only person who's seen ambush at blood pass, sword of doom and red lion! V. good samurai flicks.
My favourite Lone Wolf and Cub flick is Babycart: In Peril. Yukio was so damn cool. Best. Female. Villan. EVER!
Shogun's Samurai(1978) is great too.
share1. Throne of Blood
2. Seven Samurai
3. Samurai X (Trust & Betrayal; never Reflections or the tv series)
4. Sword of Doom
5. The Hidden Fortress
Some may not want to count Samurai X because it is animated, or because Kenshin may not be a real samurai, but the story is wonderful and ranks with me.
The best samurai movies are Kurosawa flicks, hands down.
In this order:
1) Seven Samurai (DUH!)
2) Throne of Blood
3) Yojimbo
4) Sanjuro
5) Kagemusha
Honorable mentions: Ran, Hidden Fortress, The Samurai/Musashi Miyamoto Trilogy (even though these weren't Kurosawa, still very good).
Although, I admit I've not yet seen Twilight Samurai or Zatoichi...
