You weren't supposed to LIKE it, you were supposesd to ENDURE it! I guess I'd be interested in some more specific comments than "trash" or "terrible." I thought the performances were outstanding, especially Bill Pullman. It was nice to see him get a role this good. He obviously relished it, based on his comments. The mood that the film evoked was powerful--negative in the extreme but powerful. Feel-good it wasn't. In fact, I can't remember the last movie I saw that left such strong feelings of devastation. I think that was the purpose, and it succeeded. Italian operas don't usually have an upbeat theme. You do know this is based on Rigoletto, right?

The movie was pretty good. I had no idea of it's connection to the opera but it's certainly worth seeing. Great performances. My first impression was that it was like a very very dark version of "In Good Company;" the whole dynamic of the 3 main characters that is. I also thought that the scene at remote lounge was great cinematically. Is that a real place? Unfortunately the only bad thing was the music. It was just too grating, I felt like I was at some Polka Funeral. Furthermore, I certainly agree that it was supposed to be an "enduring" process, but I also didn't really feel like Rick was that bad of a guy, especially in comparison to Aaron Stanford's character, Duke. And on a much lower level that is obviously beneath me, Agnes Bruckner's hot. So is Emmanuelle Chriqui (Duke's Wife).

What was the purpose of Duke's wife in this movie? Would anything be any different if he had been single?

I think he was stating that he didn't like the FILM, not the OUTCOME of the film. I do agree that the film was trash. There were no particularly good performances, and there was nothing special about the visuals either. I have seen Rigoletto before, and I enjoyed it, however there was one thing Rigoletto had that this movie lacked... The music.

Personally, I am not looking for an upbeat mood in a film. I like dark, powerful films, but this wasn't one of them. The only emotion it evokes powerfully are bordom and dissappointment in the film. I did not feel any of the devastation you say you felt, because the acting and the writing were so bad. The mood, the script, the acting, the characters, all made me feel nothing for the characters in this movie, nor for the outcome.
You seem to think people who didn't like it "didn't get it". On the contrary, we get it, it's just a poorly done film.
And in a post I wrote tonight, I have comments expressing my problems with this film beyond the "trash/terrible" you weren't satisified with.

reply

I agree. It's terrible.

I'm surprised at all of the criticism this film is getting. I loved it. I wanted to see it because Daniel Handler wrote it. I thought his script was good, and what exactly was wrong with the performances?

Also, just something funny, I went into this film thinking it was directed by Alexandre Rockwell. Not even close.

Bless me, father, for I have just killed quite a lot of men.
