why i hate this movie

Lets accept for a second that we actually are just like animals sexually. Why do we have a higher intelligence then all of these animals? Do you think a dog would have the determination and intellect to collect a study like Kinsey's? We hold ourselves to a higher standard. This film had brilliant performances by Neeson, Linney, and Sarsgaard, but besides that there is nothing but a confused man. He was obviously sexually corrupted by the extremist teachings of his youth and mentally abused by his father. I understand in today's society we are told to become more and more open to new sexual endeavors but some of what he dealt with is just wrong. There is a reason animals do things that we don't. Just because something feels good in the moment doesn't mean it is good. The film even shows that we are not meant for that as humans when Sarsgaard's wife wants to leave him. I'm sure many on this board will disagree, but maybe a few will in fact agree with me. It's just my opinion and I'm looking forward to hearing some responses. Keep in mind I'm only seventeen.

To each his own. You don't have to approve of everything, nobody is asking you to do anything that you don't want to do, so don't judge others for what they want to do in their lives. It's not your place to judge, there is only One who can judge, it's very explicitly commanded. We live in a free country, for everyone, not just for corporations to rape us. If you have a problem with that, try Saudi Arabia, they have a rigid definition of what is sexually acceptable.

More often than not, that which we denounce is that which frightens us, that which we fear we ourselves might be interested in, it is a psychological mechanism to try to make it go away.

I'd hate for you to grow up and become one of those holier-than-thou people who stick their nose into people's lives all the while waving a flag and pontificating on the virtues of freedom, the oxymoron of which is spectacular.

It is a great virtue to be able to change your mind when presented with new evidence, do not be obstinate. That is pride.

Best regards :-)

reply

You contradict everything you say by this idiotic comment: "It's not your place to judge, there is only One who can judge".

I can judge whatever I want and you cannot tell me to turn off my brain, we all make judgements every day, you comment is full of judgements, so keep your idiotic religious ideals to yourself and save us all the time of educating you.

reply

You missed the point of that comment. It doesn't mean you aren't allowed to think, it means you shouldn't be allowed to force your judgement upon others. This is an ideal that stands, regardless of ideals or religions. Even if a person is an atheist or agnostic, they should be able to understand that this saying simply means because you are equal, you have no right to judge as if you were a higher authority. And If you can't look past the religious context to see this main message, i guess you aren't as enlightened as you believe you are.

I don't think anyone from this generation could understand the impact that Kinsey's work had 70 to 80 years ago. Our sexual knowledge was liberated by his research. We take out sexual knowledge for granted now and with the exception of
of a few religious group who still want to keep it all in the closet. If you watch the beginning of the movie many people, institutions, educators and doctors relied on old wives tales. The Kinsey research put us at ease with our sexuality and allow us to be comfortable with our desires. As I said, something we now take for granted.

reply

Even my generation takes it for granted. Certainly he shook up the world by bringing information everyone wanted, but were too scared, ashamed or chastised to ask for.

Though I wouldn't say Kinsey put us at ease with our sexuality inasmuch as he informed us we are not alone.

Of course, in the film, Kinsey did emphasize that it was wrongful to engage in any activity without the consent and willingness of the partner. This still stands true today- and probably truer than it was in Kinsey's time.

It's definitely a better world because of his research. The closet was getting full.

One area, he didn't cover, was people with disabilites.
As a wheelchair user, People, stop me on the street to ask if I can have sex.
I haven't in 37 years for religious reasons, but, the misinformation about this area even in2011 shocks me

"As a wheelchair user, People, stop me on the street to ask if I can have sex"

Uhhh...WHAT?

Let me get this straight. You're rolling down the sidewalk, doing your own thing and SOMEONE INTENTIONALLY STOPS YOU FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASKING YOU IF YOU HAVE SEX?

"Your mother's in here with us, Karras. Would you like to leave a message?"

reply

I'm sorry I know its sounds wierd, but yes they do.
I try to have a sense of humor about it, but it gets annoying.

reply

Sorry man. I'm calling *beep* on that. There's no way you can convince me that strangers just approach you out of nowhere just to ask you about how you have sex. No way that *beep* happens. I'll need a vid or something.

"Your mother's in here with us, Karras. Would you like to leave a message?"

reply

If I can find a video, ill send it. I am not making this up.

reply

Don`t sound shocking to me at all.

thanks.

What i meant by that comment was that we are curious and we ponder a lot of things and asking questions is how we learn. We always hear things like "people should know better in 2013", but the fact of the matter is that we are not all as smart as we would like to think and how should we learn if we can ask the questions that enable us to gain knowledge. Reproducing is mostly what life is all about and therefore I dont find it shocking that other humans wanna know if you still can. A person in a wheelchair can have a number of different illnesses and since most people are not doctors it`s hard to know just by looking at you whats wrong with you.

reply

You certainly have a point. I don't mind genuine curiosity. It just got a little annoying when I first meet someone, and its Can you feed yourself? Can you have sex? can you undress, and so on concerning every aspect of my life. I will gladly answer questions, I'd just got thrown with the intensity straight off.

reply

And that I certainly understand. People are stupid sometimes and we could use a bit of reflection before doing/saying something :)

A: WTF?

Seriously, is something wrong with you?

No sex for religious reason for 37 years! You are either a priest or a fool!!

reply

It would appear that no one replying here knows of how thoroughly debunked Kinsey's research has become, some twenty years ago. He cynically manipulated his experimental models and choice of test subjects in such a blatant way, that as soon as it was all made public, any first year grad student was able to see his intellectual dishonesty. It is too bad that with the coming of an age where the curiousity is so easily satisfied through information tech, we are also witnessing the apparent death of curiosity itself.

Lets accept for a second that we actually are just like animals sexually. Why do we have a higher intelligence then all of these animals?

Sorry, but from our having a higher intelligence then all other animals it doesn't follow that we are different from other animals in all other respects as well. All species have at least one thing they are better at then the rest of the species.

This film had brilliant performances by Neeson, Linney, and Sarsgaard, but besides that there is nothing but a confused man.

Separating those two clauses by a "but besides that" is nonsensical. You don't judge the quality of a film by a virtue of the characters it shows. Did you hate the Taxi Driver too?

I understand in today's society we are told to become more and more open to new sexual endeavors

You still don't understand much. "We are told by society"?! You need to inspect a bit (a lot) your view toward authority and conformity.

but some of what he dealt with is just wrong.

Said the society to you. And you heeded everything it said. Wow, you really didn't get much out of this film.

There is a reason animals do things that we don't.

Oh, but we do them. This film reminds its viewers of that fact, which also is proven in Kinsey's two books. But, we've already established that it's as if you haven't even seen this film.

"Kinsey interviewed thousands of Americans over a period of years, and concluded: Just about everybody masturbates, 37 percent of men have had at least one homosexual experience, there is a lot of premarital and extramarital sex, and the techniques of many couples venture well beyond the traditional male-superior position. It is ironic that Kinsey's critics insist to this day that he brought about this behavior by his report, when in fact all he did was discover that the behavior was already a reality." (Roger Ebert's review)

Just because something feels good in the moment doesn't mean it is good.

That's true. And this film makes sure to point out that fact. Help yourself and watch the film again.

I'm sure many on this board will disagree, but maybe a few will in fact agree with me.

After you inspect your view toward authority and conformity, you'll perhaps see what the problem is with this sentence you wrote.

Keep in mind I'm only seventeen.

Here's an advice: Try to live your life. That would be a life that is YOURS. Be your own driver. Don't let other's drive you where they want to. Or whatever. Be a sheep and let them if you want to.

I really like Rex's response but he made a point that is very relevant. These were interviews. Kinsey didn't write up a sex manual for everyone to follow. He interviewed 1000's of people. What he wrote is what people are thinking, feeling and obviously doing. He just came from a place that was not judgmental (unlike this board) and somehow many people seem to think that he condones a free sexual attitudes just because he doesn't frown on them. He wasn't try to say "try new things" or "if it feels good ....". He's was trying to say "Don't feel bad about what you think about sex because other people are thinking the same thing.

To the op, yes you sound 17 and frightened.

OP has to be a troll. No one would be so plainly blunt and ignorant. If someone actually thought the way the OP did they would have sugarcoated it or wrote their stance a different way. Obvious troll is obvious.

OP, it's not the movie you hate, it's the point of view and the character of Kinsey you hate.

The movie is just showing us what Kinsey did, how it affected his life and the people around him, and how he felt about it. It's not saying he was right or wrong. There was a lot I disagreed with, but I understood that I'm observing the life of a human being and how his decisions and actions affected his life in good or bad ways.
