A few too many twists

At some time in the course of a movie, the audience needs to know what really happened to the characters. So when the characters finally start revealing what happened, we the audience can say, "Ahhh now I get it." But then 10 minutes later the character says, "Wait, I was lying. Here is what really happened."

Sorry, don't agree. It's very close to being a perfect film imho.

I really liked that final twist you mention. Plus, it goes perfectly with that character (i.e. a father who does everything he can to protect his daughter)

I agree with the OP - the film is waaaaaay too far-fetched and fantastic for
belief. Almost soap opera-ish in its over-plotting. Still, it's beautifully
crafted, marvelously acted, and worth one viewing. Another problem: it's way
too long.

My related quibble is, how did Gilbert Neuville know Margot (and not her father) shot his son Philiipe, and that Margot was still alive? Perhaps he hired private detectives after the disappearance of the goons hired to murder Margot, but since her staged murder happened like it was supposed to, Neuville wouldn't necessarily know something was up.

Perhaps I'm wrong to assume Neuville knew Margot had been the shooter, and just wanted her dead for having been involved somehow in Philippe's death.

Manhammer, you've more or less answered your own question.

No, but when the goons disappeared he would've become suspicious.
Plus I'm not sure the goons were going to murder Margot. At least not right away.
I think it was a kidnapping, get a confession out of her, then kill her kinda-deal.

Perhaps I'm wrong to assume Neuville knew Margot had been the shooter, and just wanted her dead for having been involved somehow in Philippe's death.

I don't think Neuville was 100% sure Margot was the shooter, but as you say, she was probably involved in some way.

Whilst I liked the complexity of the plot I agree the average viewer might get too disoriented. Too much information is given at the end and one struggles to catch up. It could’ve worked in a novel format because a reader decides how quickly they read but in a film format that doesn’t quite apply
