Imaginary Characters?

I watched this film for the first time last night and have to say I thought it was brilliant. The scene with Robin and Walter was perhaps the most difficult and uncomfortable scene I have had the 'pleasure' of watching(and I mean that as a compliment.) However, certain characters seemed to be involved in situations that were far to contrived and coincidental for my liking, such as Robin happening to be abused by her father, and Candy happening to operate outside Walter's window and Lucas sporadically turning up at Walter's low moments. Originally I was beginning to alter my opinion of the film due to these stilted and contrived plot developments. However, then I noticed that Walter gained something from each of these 'coincidences' and all three characters didn't seem to interact with anyone else, besides perhaps Candy. I finally came to the conclusion that they must have been characters invented by Walter as a coping device when I saw Walter's face in place of Candy's for a split second as he pummeled him. Clearly this was a kind of redemption for Walter. I would be curious to hear what others thought, and in particular, anyone who dismisses my theory but still loves the film, because I would assume the contrivances would tarnish the film somewhat, if you didn't have the 'imaginary' theory.
