The reason it flopped is because...

It's not goofy enough to hold kid's attention and not smart enough to hold parent's attention. Just my opinion.

Since when are adults meant to behave so badly and anonymously attack one another over childrens' movies? Let's look at this in perspective. It IS a kids' movie. It was marketed and rated as such. It IS the next in what will continue to be the trend amongst kids' movies: CGI. Like it or not, bad artwork or not; it's here to stay. It IS impotant to remember that kids do not need to be talked to as if they are idiots. They CAN understand more complex humor and enjoy sillier stuff at the same time. And even a mediocre film can educate a child on history. (BTW, I thought the film was cute.)

Our 5 year old daughter asked questions when we read about the Dickins Medals at the end of the film. War is never an easy subject to explain to a child, but in the context of a kids' movie one can find opportunities to help them understand the world around them. I think it was good timing for this film to be released but the timing may also have done it some harm in sales. War is upon the face of the middle east right now and one cannot watch the news without hearing about. Help our kids understand in a way that informs them yet keeps them from fear. A jolly romp with Ewan, John, Hugh, Jim, Ricky and Tim may be just the help a parent needs to broach a tough subject.

Overall, this movie offers us a fun night in with the littles and is worth a watch.

...it was not marketed well (at all?) in the US - that's why it did poorly Stateside.

The fact that it isn't up to Pixar standard is irrelevant as it's a good cartoon story for the kids to watch. I detested Doogal, Chicken Little, and thought Madagascar was just a series of attempted jokes strung together. At least Valiant had a plot (yes, it was weak, but something is better than nothing).

What marketing was done for Valiant? I don't remember any merchandising tie-in with the fastfood chains.... and while it meant Valiant was a "flop" moneywise, I much prefer it to NOT have been marketed that way. If only Pixar films were marketed that way.....

This movie is possibly one of the worse animations I have ever seen.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that it's one of the worst. The problem is that it seems like it's just thrown together. I did like the falcons, though, especially Von Talon. Maybe it's just because they're bad guys or because Von Talon is voiced by Tim Curry, but I liked them. They were a relief from Valiant's cheesy, overly motivated attitude (seriously, he really needed some flaws other than being short) and Bugsy's annoying and not the least bit funny bad hygen. Bugsy should have gotten eaten by the falcons; sometimes he was almost funny.....and then he wasn't. Put him out of his misery.

Crap. A friggin tribute to birds?? Seriously?? Crap, embarassing, too short, not funny, just a heap of give me my money back rubbish. Thanks Ricky, stick to Extras.

There were a lot of jokes in the film that referenced British WWII films like the Dam Busters, 633 Squadron, Battle of Britain, etc. if you are not aquainted with this genre then you would miss quite a lot of the adult aimed humour, the interaction between the pidgeons & the falcons was reminicent to some of blackadder episodes. I think that the Ricky Gervaise voiced character was added because Gervaise is currently the hottest commedian about, following his awards for the office & they shoehorned him in to the story's detriment.

Personaly speaking I enjoyed the film & found it much better than say Madagascar (which lacked a satisfactory end) but it may be that it is too British for some.

you can't get the wood you know

I love the movie.. Only someone really interested in WWII history would get it anyways.

Birds were used to carry messages.

I lack any degree in History but I got it and it was still a poor film.

It didnt flop. It holds both attention because of WWII and cute pigeons.

my three kids, age 10, 8, 5 absolutely love the movie. it was a birthday present for my middle one last summer.

since i have english parents and spent a couple of years there during my childhood, i can see english humour and phrases that do not necessarily work for an american audience. the yodelling torture scene with john cleese's reaction has me laughing every time whereas my wife does not "appreciate" that humour.

it is by no means a classic but remember it is a kids movie.

I thought it flopped because it was aimed at Children, and it was about WW2. Animated or not, I can't imagine it being too interesting to a child. I enjoyed it when I was 13, though.
