Corrections about Europe

Some Major errors about Europe in the movie:

1. Why Manchester United Supporters in London? Why didn't they pick Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall...hooligans? Manchester is situated about 330km north of London.

2. Crans-sur-Mer doesn't exsist and the location shows the landscape of southern France (St-Tropez) while they actually are on the location of Calais or Boulogne-sur-Mer in Northern France.

3. While going from Bratislava to Berlin, the map on the dinertable shows a representation of the Black forest (Schwartzwald). The Black Forest actually is located in South-Western Germany (at the frontier with Alsace, France).

4. It's impossible to see as many trees next to the Louvre in Paris.

5. It's not possible to announce the death of the pope and having a new one on the same day. They're must be a conclave with all of the cardinals of the world under the age of 80 to elect a new one...so nobody would actually believe that Scott is the new pope.

6. The map on the table showd Rome to be on the east of Berlin....Rome is to the south of Berlin.

7. Scotty says they're's no drinking age in England...The drinking age is 18 in England (16 in my country, Belgium).

- One could perhaps buy a hamburger for one USD in Bratislavia. Perhaps. (Probably not an edible hamburger, either, but one of those tasteless paper objects sold by the antifood chain "McDonald's"). Needless to say, one would have to exchange the USD first, since any storekeeper would only snicker at a clueless cretin trying to pay with useless exotic money. And hardly any exchange place would even bother to accept a single dollar bill for exchanging (to say nothing of coins...).

- Indeed, "Miami Vice" was quite popular throughout Europe, from Bratislavia to Barcelone. In 1987.

- "Dukes of Hazzard", on the other hand, was not. Even in 1987.

i dont know if this has been posted already, cause i couldnt be botherd to read them all but the reason manchester united supporters was in london, was so they could travel to where ever it was in europe to go and watch a game which happened to have manchester united playing

reply

There isn't a reason. They support man united, but live in london. You don't have to live in manchester to like united OR city.

reply

'the reason manchester united supporters was in london, was so they could travel to where ever it was in europe to go and watch a game which happened to have manchester united playing'

Thats not the case, as I'm sure Vinnie Jones character says that theyve walked into the home pub of the supporters club, so they must be local to London. In reality although man Utd would have plenty of supporters in London, theres no way on earth they'd have a pub there exclusively just for them.
Although theres a few different accents among the hooligans, none of them sound remotely like theyre from manchester, mind you, with man Utd thats not so unexpected!

In Bratislava, at the main train station, a hamburger is a slice of very dodgy sausage in a bun, with ketchup. A cheeseburger is a slice of processed cheese. In a bun. With ketchup. It's really not a great place. I'd say the representation of the paneláki in Petrzalka is fairly accurate, too. Apart from the exchange rate, they really captured the place. The Novy Most is fairly cool though (although it costs $5 to get to the viewing platform)

reply

when considering i think like 90% of the film was filmed in czech republic, and that all of the places were cut and pasted on...haha...even all of the extras were czech extras including the opening scene at the "american" high school...cant blame them i mean cuz of their low budget...i mean its only a comedy movie that bases everything on merely stereotypes...no reason to get all worked up about it

reply

I don't know if there's any point in posting, but I'll try. I'm an American. I only watched it in the first place because Michelle was in it. Going in, I assumed it would be a total waste of time. I was wrong. I thought it was hysterical. Particularly the scene in Eastern Europe. Not because I believed you could get a luxuary hotel for about $1.50 American, but bacause you can't. It was so absurd that I had to laugh. See, that's what comedies are supposed to do. Make you laugh. If they don't, they failed in their mission.

The whole point of the film was that it was making fun of the stereotypical point of view of Europe that some (notice how I said some, not all) Americans have. That was part of the joke of this film. It can't be taken seriously. You can't try and pick apart what's actually true in real life and what's not true. You'd totally be missing the point of the film. But then again I'm just some "ignorant" American who doesn't know anything about the rest of the world.

Nothing else needs to be said, this is exactly what the movie is about. No need to pick it apart, measure, weigh, scrutinse every little aspect of this movie, it did exactly as it intended and I loved it. Im Australian and am over the fact that everyone starts these arguments about anti-americanism, and the fact someone is being branded ignorant because of where they are from. We are talking about a clever, simple comedy. I personally couldnt care if the producer was a 13 year old eskimo with three eyeballs, i simply enjoyed the movie for what it was.

Yes, the high school graduation scene was shot in a school in prague, probably the one im going to go to next year :p. In fact, many famous movies have been shot in prague - Narnia, Oliver Twist, Mission Impossible 1, xXx, Blade movies, and harry potter was GOING to b shot here, but at the last minute....:( nope. And as for the czech extras, i happen to know the guy who plays Scotty's brother, Bert. He used to go to that school too. So dont believe the hype! :)

And the biggest blunder of all blunders in this movie - The Manchester United Song.

That is so NOT their song! They expect us to believe that My Baby Takes The Morning Train is... OH, wait a minute!!!

I forgot. This was a movie. I should know better next time.

This is one of the funniest posts I've ever read on IMDB. People are taking this as if it's a historical drama! It's a SATIRE! You're supposed to laugh at it! It's supposed to be stupid! The director is making fun of every stereotype he can think of. I died laughing when the red bus went into France and Mad Maynard was screaming and cussing like well, only the British can!

reply

I understand nobody likes stereotypes placed on them over and over I don't consider a Hollywood movie to be a good representation of what we Americans think of Europe. They exaggerate stereotypes for humor and almost all of the portrayals of people in countries over there were wrong. But should we just accurate show every single country, every single accent and town knowing that it won't be in the least funny? Has there ever been a movie where Americans have been shown as fat, lazy loud idiots who can't even comprehend the culture of another country? Of course there has! But that's what most people think of us and most people think it's funny. I can't only assume an idiot would actually take those kind of dumb stereotypes into effect when they begin to judge someone from another country.

And I really thought this movie was freaken hilarious! Especially the Manchester United scene! I've only been to Spain but I've always wanted to travel all over Europe! Just wish it wasn't so expensive!

reply

Yeah I agree. I feel like it was exceedingly obvious that this movie was playing off of straight up stereotypes, every stereotype a young teenage American would think of with Europe...and not going for accuracy. It was a farcical comedy about Europe from an American stereotype point of view. The audience was American, too, and we generally wouldn't pick up on those details mentioned in the OP thread.

So, Europeans being insulted...I can see that. But trying to point out real life inaccuracies seems fruitless since the whole thing was a farce. Audience members know that too...no, this isn't how Europe really is...but a comedy playing off stereotypes.

or maybe it's just fun to point out those inaccuracies? like if there was a European movie about "stupid fat America" and they had states and monuments mixed up...I can see a thread appearing on IMDb pointing out the mistakes.

so okay, lol

Who Cares!?

may i ask.. all of you saying "get over it" or "it's just a movie", are you american?

cause it seems like the proper hipocrasy of americans, that jokes about europeans, no matter how incorrect or insulting, are funny as hell. while jokes about americans(borat anyone? how many legal threats?) are frowned upon? you can't take the heat, but you'd be happy to give it?

note that i did not care much about the movie. i didn't hate it but i didn't waste too much time thinking about it. but extreme stereotypes are a delicate matter, and should only be used by someone like dave chappelle who knows what he's doing.

So what you're sayin is not everyone marries their cousins in 'bama? :D

Kiddin' - I agree with you 100%

Me, I'm miffed they never got to Denmark (which is my neck of the woods) - but that's mostly because I want to complain about inaccuracies too :)

Copenhagens street-walker district covers all of 2 city blocks though - so it'd be pretty damn hard to screw it up.

reply

No offence, but you'd have to be pretty stupid to believe all those were unintentional mistakes.

i live in the very north north north of england, like the border of scotland if you want to be precise, and i think Eurotrip is the best movie ever, its riddled with mistakes, sure fair enough and Britain isnt portrayed very well by the Manc's but ive got to tell you that my town of Ash bears more resemblence to Bratislava on the film than Eurotrip, just thought that was funny

It seems that the inaccuracies are quite easily removable. Like, the map could just be taken out. If they had checked a few things they could just remove some of these things without much trouble at all. I guess they figured their target audience won't notice these things. I know I (16) didn't. It shouldn't take away from the film. I thought it did exactly what it intended, which was to entertain, and more, which was to make me want to go to Europe.

reply

Have fun when you get to Europe, and I'm glad you now know its gonna be nothing like in the film.
I think I'll take the view that a lot of the mistakes were deliberate and put in amuse those of us with more Geographical knowledge than a proportion of the target audience. After all, the mistakes made me laugh almost as much as the jokes. It was funny in its ridiculousness (is that a word?) in the same way as something like Monty Python and the holy grail.

reply

My particular favourite was how they flew from Berlin to Rome even though they'd all had their passports stolen :D

Very funny movie though, fair play.

reply

You might actually be able to do that, since both are in the Schengen zone (therefore no border controls).

1. Why Manchester United Supporters in London? Why didn't they pick Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall...hooligans? Manchester is situated about 330km north of London.

Why shouldn't they choose Man Utd supporters? What difference does it make where Manchester is situated?

First of all it's a running joke that Man Utd supporters are cockneys. I thought the fact that Vinnie Jones is a cockney was a nice touch. Secondly, they could well have been passing through London on there way to Paris. I know he said it was a private members club, but he was just saying that. It's not beyond the realms of possibilty that fans (hooligans?) take over a bar and consider it to be a private members club for their own purposes, for the time of there visit.

As for your other 6 points - ????????????????????
It's a film. Fiction. They don't need to get every fact true to life. If Scotty says there is no drinking age in England, maybe it was a joke? A lot of English would agree with him, after seeing the amount of underage drinking that goes on. If it wasn't a joke, then for the purposes of this film there is no legal drinking age in England. Just accept the film for what it is.
