Good Steampunk Films?

I haven't seen this yet, but I'm in the mood to see a bunch of good steampunk films. Anyone got some recommendations in addition to this? Animated or otherwise?

reply

Lot's of people slate Steamboy but I like it, and it is an exemplary piece of Steampunk cinema.

I would also recommend The City of Lost Children. Avoid 'Wild Wild West' with a passion ;)

Good futuristic Steampunk cinema (a future extrapolated from a Steampunk past)includes, Casshern (clockwork robots, Dr. Azuma's lab) and Brazil.

There is a lot more Steampunk literature out there than Steampunk cinema. There are, however, elements of Steampunk in quite a few films.

Enjoy.

Brazil is more Dieselpunk than steampunk, but it's worth watching if you're a fan of the dystopian genre. Sky Captain also falls into more of a Dieselpunk vein (though it's considered to have Steampunk elements by some), but that movie is also worth a watch.
If you liked Steamboy I'd definitely recommend the anime series Last Exile, and Ergo Proxy, which deals with more Cyberpunk themes but has a very steampunk-inspired feel.
One very, very fun to watch steampunk movie (fans of the books are going to kill me for saying this) is A Series of Unfortunate Events.

You might also want to try an animated film called The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello, which is something like a steampunk version of Alien

Check youtube for "A gentlemen's duel". A nice romp. ;)

I SECOND THIS and recommend it to anybody interested in the Steampunk.

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations... is truly a piece of artwork. Unfortunately I have been unable to source the Badlands (or is it Shadowlands?) short films made prior to MGEJM. Apparently there are a few more sequels centered around Jasper Morello to follow but I don't know when we can expect them.

wild wild west was a terrible teririble movie (by today's standards). it's a fun steampunk romp, and the pathetically bad dialogue and storytelling, just adds to the charm and authenticity of steampunk experience

Hellboy II:The Golden Army is very steampunk..

Basically any of the old Captain Nemo films qualify as well..

reply

I can't seem to find any steampunk films at all - as said before, there are way more books. Could someone recommend some decent steampunk novels as well?
The Mortal Engines Quartet is amazing! Needs a movie NOW!

There's an eye in me soup.

Try Laputa - Castle In The Sky

Try Nadia:Secret of Blue Water

Any other movies out there?

reply

Since they aren't out yet, one can't really say if these are definitely steampunk, but the Victorian-formal decor of "Franklyn" (http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/franklyn/trailer) could be one bit of steampunk. The ruined atmosphere and salvaged apparati of "9" (http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/9-feature/trailer) might be considered another, although there's not really much of steam or punk there. *grin*

I really like China Mieville's books, try Perdido street station or Iron Council, great steampunk fantasy!

reply

As much as I'd love there to be films of the Mortal Engines series, do you really think they could POSSIBLY do the books justice? Think of the budget you'd need lol.

And anyway there are things that although unquestioned in the books, couldn't easilly be portrayed visually (city jaws for instance).

reply

This one is a bit of a stretch, but I think it's an amazing movie- The Prestige.

It's Victorian-era England, and there's some cool technology involved.

I'm assuming if you like steampunk, you like the look/feel of the Victorian era, and interesting technology. I think the Prestige fits the bill.

Try steampunk animes, Start with Miyazaki's

Happy endings are just stories that haven't finished yet

reply

yeah, castle in the sky and howl's moving castle are steampunk, and very very good also.

reply

"The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." was an awesome sci-fi/Steampunk/western series with Bruce Campbell.
"The Mutant Cronicles" was also imho sort of stempunk-ish

reply

I'd throw in "The twelve monkeys" too: it is sorta steampunk in more than one scene. And anyway it's an amazing movie.

It's been said before but Laputa: Castle in the Sky by Miyazaki's Ghibli. I'd say that is a much superior film to Steamboy. While it may not have the complex visuals of Steamboy, it has FAR more emotional clout and is one of my favourite all-time films. A lot of the Ghibli films have steampunk elements to them so check them out, notably Howl's Moving Castle.

Casshern has also been mentioned, and it does have steampunk elements. I enjoyed that film as it plays out like a live action anime. The direction in that film is intense!

Also, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Stardust have limited steampunk elements to them and I enjoyed those films.

And so did Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan's Around the World in 80 Days. I liked that film as an enjoyable air-headed romp, though many don't.

The Golden Compass, based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy also has steampunk elements, though it is the first of three films, the last two of which seem destined to never be made.

As for Wild Wild West... yep - definitely angling for the steampunk thing from what I remember. I really don't remember it well enough to say if it's any good though... which might just say it all...

Van Helsing, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and The Time Machine all have steampunk elements, but sadly suck as movies.

Upon reading your question, I drew a blank regarding any movies, but a single book popped into my mind: "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Maybe ya heard of 'em? 2 undisputed masters of cyberpunk, collaborating to create a damn good steampunk novel. Im still hoping for Rex Miller, John Shirley, and mebbie Skip-N-Specter to come out with a CyberSteamSplatterPunk book, but i digress.

I found good list for steampunk movies http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,13126.0.html

Bump....

I came to this thread for the same reason: looking for more steampunk films.

I find it odd that we have so many cyberpunk, cybernoir and neo-noir films but we have no or very few steampunk inspired films.

It's also odd that video games seem to explore steampunk a lot more. In fact, steampunk has its own genre in the world of interactive entertainment.

Scouring through this thread it appears other than the Rocketeer, The City of Lost Children and a little bit of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, live-action doesn't get much in the way of steampunk.
