Joe's dad is actually... *SPOILERS*

...dead, right?

Fin and Olivia have suffered losses. He's supposedly the only one who hasn't.

But we never see Joe's dad. When talking about him, Joe usually has to leave - maybe, like Olivia, he doesn't want people to see him break down? When his "dad" calls, Joe talks in another language - we really have no clue who he's talking to.

Then there's the part where Joe and his dad are going to meet Fin. Joe invites Fin and is surprised when Fin says yes. Hours later, Joe and his dad are no shows. When Joe is describing what happened,it sounds as if he's making up something.

I think Joe's dad is dead.

No.

It never occurred to me to think that. I have to wonder why so many people read such amazing things into movies?

In the deleted scenes, there is a scene that's supposed to be the ending,I think, where she asks Joe how his dad is doing, and he tells her to ask him herself. He replies to her by saying,"I would be doing much better, gorgeous, if you sat here with me."And Joe tells her,"Now you see where I get it from."
"1)There is a God,and 2)Im not him."

Do you have a link for that deleted scene?

I don't think Joe's dad is dead. I think the theme of the movie is more about loneliness. Joe is taking care of his dad alone, he's running his hot dog truck alone... I think that's what ties the three characters together.

Yes we do. He clearly said "Digame, Papi" when he answered the phone. He was talking to his dad.

reply

I agree.
Joe's Dad was NOT dead.
He was sick, and Joe sort of took care of him.

I don't think he's dead, but I do think he's dying though, and/or is becoming senile, all that talk about medicine and him being sick etc. Joe is slowly loosing his father/has already lost who his father used to be. At least that's how I took it, I thought Joe's dad would die during the course of the movie.

reply

Me too...Especially when Joe got that last phone call, I thought it was going to be about that his Dad had died.
