Watching this anime...are you a guy?

I'm a guy. A friend of mine, a guy, let me borrow any anime series from his collection the other night, to try out. I'm not a big anime fan at all, and I only watch one anime seriously (IGPX), and I have a few films. But, to try something new, I looked through his collection to see what he had, and I was surprised to see AzuManga Daioh among his sets. Obviously you know why, its a series about all girls.

So I asked him what's it all about, and he told me the premise of the story about a group of high school girls who go through zany adventures. Then he pointed out to me, "Yea, you might think its weird that I have a series like this because I'm a guy." But I told him I didn't care, and in fact, I wanted to give it a try because its something new.

So far, I'm in the middle of watching this series and its not that bad, its kinda funny. I watch it in Japanese, and one of the neat things about this comedy it provides some good cultural points about Japanese school life and culture in general, and I like anime humor, its off the wall and zany (especially with its inherent animations).

If you are a guy, and even though its a series about girls, do you guys care? I even read on wikipedia that the manga first appeared in a magazine for guys, and it indicated that this series is not what they call a "shojo" series (for girl fans). Obviously there are some traits about this show that is geared towards guys (I won't insult your intelligence), yet I can see why there is always an innate curiosity when it comes to a anime series about girls.

So far, I really enjoy the series, even though most of my guy friends would really egg me and make fun of me if they ever saw what I was watching. But hey, weren't we all Sailor Moon fans when we were kids?

Real girls? I wish there was a real Osaka out there somewhere in the real world. I would love to marry her. At first, I thought it was strange but then the whole show became hilarious and fun to watch. I preferred to watch this fansub because a lot of the jokes are unexplained in the American DVDs. Another type of show like this is Ichigo mashimaro. It's not that random and much more realistic but it's defintely got the charm with cute girls doing cute stuff.

I'm a guy in his late thirties and I find the show hilarious, a friend told me she was watching it and that I should check it out, she sent a link to the first part of episode one and I clicked more out of politeness than intention to watch, I was soon hooked and have now watched most episodes.

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

as sad as it is I know girls like Osaka

I'm a guy and I thought it was great. It was definitely a change of pace for me, but I really took to Azumanga for some reason. Might have been because I watched Excel Saga before it, easing me into a different genre, with Azumanga being a full-fledged plunge into watching new types of anime.

Take it a step further and watch Lucky Star. It's like Azumanga Diaoh on speed.

I do have a friend, a guy, that Azumanga is his favourite anime so far. I am a girl and really don't feel that much about it.

It never really occured to me that I should somehow feel different watching this, because I'm a guy. I just seek out anime series that are generally highly recommended (regardless of their themes really) and came along the azumanga daioh series. It took me a while to warm up to the humour but in the end I really loved it. The themes aren't especially girly. It may seem that way because it's not one of the typical robots or martial arts based anime with kids bashing monsters to hell. This series just has this distinct slow, cute & cosy feel-good type of thing going on.
I guess I've seen some weirder stuff I should worry about :).

I actually really enjoyed this series, just finished it and found myself wanting more. I would recommend it to anyone (Guy or Girl) who wants a refreshing change.

I agree that it does take a while to warm up to the series but in the end it was great.

I'm not reading 5 pages of this potentially being said already, but shoujo usually has some sort of deep plot that some guys would find kinda boring (despite Yui Horie, I can't get past episode one of Fruits Basket). A slice-of-life comedy about girls in high school with an obligatory beach scene like Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, and Minami-ke (to name a few) can mostly be guessed as "geared towards guys".

I know it's been two years after you posted, but you and your friends shouldn't be ashamed of watching stuff like this, because you're the intended audience.

And besides, anybody who makes fun of you for watching this is missing out on some really funny stuff!

I am a guy and this is one of my favorite series. I actually prefer shojomanga and anime to shonenmanga and anime. (and yes i was a fan of Sailor Moon as a kid.)
