The movie is better than the current show.

The movie version was better. Yes, this new show is closer to the books. But I do not care about how the film is close to them .However, casting, acting, visuality and narration was great in the film . The film captured the melancholic ,gothic and dark tone in the books with its visuality, atmosphere ,costumes and narration. The only comedy in the film was Jim Carry. And he was not completely funny at all. I mean his was dark comedy. And the casting of the film was very harmonious with the books. And those complaining that the film compressed the 3 books into one film ,to me it was not a problem and they had to do so. Because it was a series of 13 books. They were planning to complete the series with 2nd and 3rd film. It was impossible to make one film per book because each year the children in the film grew up . They could not make 13 films for 13 books, right?

I agree! I haven't read the books, so the show might be a better adaptation. But I think the movie is better. It's very over the top, but it doesn't feel like a spoof like the show does. Also, Jim Carrey was waaay better than Count Stinson (seriously, so. many. Barney. mannerisms.) He was absurd just like NPH, but he was also genuenly menacing. He brought both cartoon and psycopath to the mix. The children were better actors too.

Add to that the shows jarring effects and yeah, I believe the movie is overall better as it's own thing (not necessarily as an adaptation).

Especially Violet in the movie, she was unforgettable. She looked ''unfortunate'' :)

I prefer the movie too.

I had mixed feelings about the 2004 movie, but it definitely has its good points. In addition to the things that have already been mentioned about Jim Carrey's performance and such, I always found the musical score of the 2004 movie to be quite memorable and fitting for the story:
