This is a children's movie?

I think not. I would never let my grandchildren watch it until they are 18. Terrible movie. I will never be able to recover these minutes. I could have used them for something more pleasant, like a root canal.

The books were orginally intended for adults BUT I did read the series when I was nine loved them and then reread them as an adult and they're still appealing. Sure they're dark and so is the movie and have very heavy subject matter all the way through. But that's life. Life isn't always bright. Not every child has had it good. The Baudelaires had it good and it was all taken away and that happens in reality. I don't see how this is bad for kids. It's a good teaching mechanism. Like the beginning says not every movie can be about a happy little elf

First of all, I think you and Lemony Snicket would get along because of 'I could have used them for something more pleasant, like a root canal.'

Second, I thought this movie was actually too childish. Olaf was not supposed to be a goofball[no offense to Jim Carrey I love him.

I love this movie and always have, but it should have had a more serious tone like the books. This wasn't supposed to be silly or campy and yet it was. It's a shame that this story wasn't taken seriously and instead they tried to turn it into a comedy/campy villain/happy ending type of movie. That's not what the story was. It's a shame that we had this cast that I felt was perfect and yet they didn't get a chance to do the real story and really shine as their characters and more to the point get to continue the story. This movie only covered 3 out of the thirteen books.

It was perfectly casted and Jim Carrey should have shined as a serious character, but instead they turned Olaf into a clown so the kiddies wouldn't get scared, they toned down everything and crunched the story down to almost nothing, and slapped a happy ending on it. So you wouldn't let your children watch it? Wow. I'd hate to see what you would say if you saw the REAL story-the one in the books. Actually the overall story wasn't that far off from the movie- I should say the character of Count Olaf. That was the big thing that was missing from the movie.

The storyline was pretty much the same but it was the main antagonist that was toned down and altered so children wouldn't get scared which not only changed the tone of the story but it also altered a major character which makes it feel like it's nothing like the books. So yes I would say this movie was very much a kids movie. Count Olaf was less of a villain and more of a clown in this, unfortunately. Again, I hope no one gets defensive because I did enjoy this movie anyway and I loved the cast, but this movie could have been a lot better and it seriously paled in comparison to the books.

I'm a Timelord.
Right, not pompous at all then.

maybe you could provide some points as to why you feel this is not suitable for children

I adore this movie. I love it. Jim Carrey was wonderful. Timothy Spall, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, all wonderful.

I first saw it when I was 9 or 10. It's a very good film, with lots of soul. The only film that comes close to this in terms of feel and execution is The Spiderwick Chronicles.

I like that boulder. That is a nice boulder.

Did you see part 2? Count Olaf and his orphans round up illegals and turn them in for money like old pop bottles.

You have to be kidding me. It's not that bad movie because I've seen worsen movies
