Accents?

I am watching the movie and the characters are from Yorkshire...
I don't know a lot about England but I keep thinking I am hearing a hint of Irish in some of the characters' voices. Can anyone from the UK (or other...) explain how you differentiate the different accents in England? I'm just really interested.

Yorkshire is more or less to Britian the way the Midwestern states are to the US...fewer modern cities, primarily villages and mostly agrarian. Think Pa Kettle or the Peppridge Farm guy. "Pepp-ridge Fahhm Re-MEM-baaaahz"

As an American lover of British movies, I have to say that the accent was one of the things that actually annoyed me about this one. That particular Yorkshire accent just isn't my cup of tea.

I prefer Dame Maggie Smith's typical accent---though I don't know what region it comes from. I know this didn't answer your question, but thought I'd share my thoughts.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Here in the U.S., the Irish accent is more familiar than many British Isles accents, so a less familiar one, like Yorkshire, "sounds Irish." The two accents are distinct, though.

The entire cast seems to have stepped out of Coronation Street. One of them sounds so much like Audrey Roberts, I have to look twice.

Anyway, just taking a break from the TV, having bikkies and tea.

Seriously, I haven't seen Corrie for more than twenty years.

Wasn't Coronation Street in the Eastend of London? East End accent is totally different from a Yorkshire one. Unless the character you mention was supposed to be from Yorkshire.

I think you're referring to Eastenders.

reply

No I wasn't thinking of the Eastenders. I've never watched Coronation Street and thought it was set in London but on looking it up I see it was set in Manchester. My mistake.
