Also the time it takes to find and marry a handsome straight laced Jewish doctor with glasses. This movie is pretty messed up.

Yes, he first had to get some rest for his health issues and, after relaxing & reflecting, traveled to 12 states chasing down all his former girlfriends to find clues to understand himself, which set him free -- enlightened him or however you want to put it -- and thus he tracked down Erica in Paris. Six months sounds about right.
