Are Christians actually like that?

I'm a Christian and I have never met one like those girls, maybe it's an american thing.

It's a humorous exaggeration for the most part but much of the behavior is based on an actual, upper middle class...and yes, American culture of "Christianity".

As an atheist American with a Jewish background I'm wondering the same thing. My stepmother is a Christian ans she says that her school used to be like this movie. But that was in the 70s. This movie feels like the 70s/80s anyway. It's so old fashioned. I can't believe that there would be a school filled with such ignorant kids still, in this age.

I would say it's more 90ish and even accurate up to the release date. Back in the 70's, Evangelist Christians were more conservative and looked more like characters on Little House on the Prairie. When conservatism gained power in the 80's, many changes occurred in Christian churches, including becoming more accepting of modern ideologies.

This helped them become more accepted and powerful, which they then used to push their antiquated ideology into mainstream America. Back in the 70's, you wouldn't see an evangelist Christian child with the popular kids at school, but it was common in the 90's and they often ruled the playgrounds.

Plus, the attire just all looks more appropriate.

I actually think it was supposed to have been modern day America when the movie was released, but the events were probably more shaped by the 90's.

I went to a private school where kids were sort of like that. I live in America. The movie is exaggerated, but I remember at my school we had prayer requests every day. People would pray for others to get saved and one girl (with a classroom full of boys) prayed to start her period. As middle schoolers, we had C.H.A.M.P. cards for the Lord and if we got 5 hole punches we were punished. Each letter represented a trait and had a Bible verse below it. It was such a silly concept to 14 year old kids. No lunch service was present so we packed our own , but on Fridays they would order Chik - Fil -A due to its Christian affiliation. The moms who helped out would encourage us to eat dessert first because if the rapture happened, we could at least have the tasty part first!

Hard to believe people are so stupid.

They're not Christians.

Growing up in a Christian household, with parents who worked at a Christian group home with other Christian couples and office workers, and of course, attending churches I can say I've definitely known people like that and they are the reason I abandoned all that as soon as I could.

I've been a Christian for almost 30 years and no, Christians are not like that. I've seen some that acted like Mandy Moor's character and it's sickening. We shouldn't be looking to people to be our example. Jesus set the example and that's where our focus need to be. Read the Bible and study how Jesus lived and you will know what a Christian is supposed to be like.

reply

So you have "Definitely known people like that" huh? Let me fill you in on something you may haven't noticed in this big ol' world: Just because someone CALLS themselves a Christian, it does not mean they aARE a Christian. Just because someone CALLS themselves a Buddhist, it doesn't mean they ARE a Buddhist. Just because someone CALLS themselves an "Emotionally mature human being" it doesn't mean they ARE one. Ya gettin' the picture sparky?

reply

That makes no sense. Why would anyone calls himself something he's not, dumbass?

reply

The religion isn't the problem. It's the people who pervert it for their own reasons and gain (like a lot of pastors) that are.

The best example of how a Christian should be towards others was the one they were trying to "save" the whole time. She accepted everybody despite their faults and flaws, even in the end she was concerned for Mandy Moore's character.

I'm a pastor's kid, grew up in church and went to a few "Christian" schools. When people use their "Christianity" as a status symbol, it's just not right and very hypocritical.

I have my faith, but don't trust many pastors and churches because of the two faced hypocrisy.

And if you really disagree with someone's choices, it's not your place to judge. Hate the sin, not the sinner.

Yes, they are really like that in America. I personally thought this movie had a tame representation of how they act in real life. But I want to be specific here .... most Christians who act like this are called "Born-Again" Christians, and I;d say about 98% of them are batsh!t crazy.

You people are funny, like this comment

Yes, they are really like that in America.
Tell me hipkat333, did you really do an in-depth study of Christians? I think you'd be more honest to say "in my limited experience." I don't believe anyone on here has the depth of knowledge about US Christians to make statements like this. Obviously, you're too immature to realize the limitations of your knowledge, have an anti-Christian bias(for personal reasons) or are just dishonest about it.

I went to a rural conservative school and some kids were very much like this.

I joined the school christian club (i was trying to find where i fit in..kept trying different things out). There was this perfect blonde girl, beautiful, smart, nice, christian and pure..everyone looked up to her. I spent time with her in that club and discovered I thought she was fake...wed just say a daily prayer to start things off and shed start shaking and mumbling to herself "speaking in tongues".. It was creepy as hell but of course everyone admired her for her dedication to christ :/

Anyway, it became clear to me that whole club was full of rich, christian, preppy, judgmental idiots. Most of the meetings were spent with them talking about other kids who were different and now they needed to help them find god..really they were just gossiping. I overheard them talking about my friend one day who had tarot cards that she liked to play around with, and that magik game..even i would sit and play them with her at times. Anyway at one meeting they brought her up and were talking about how shes a sinner and the cards were witchcraft etc. they were trying to subtly insult me too. That was the last meeting i ever went to and im still ashamed i hung around that awful crowd as long as i did.

They made fun of us all the time in music class too. Then they really had a field day when I went goth for a brief period of time lol...ahh, high school memories
