Allie cheated on her fiance with Noah

How can anyone feel so lovely about this film's love story, when in fact Allie was engaged to be married and then went and had sex with Noah? What a backstabbing slut. How would you feel if you were engaged and your fiancé went and slept with their old boyfriend or girlfriend?

reply

Yes, it's hard to root for love stories like this where there's cheating. It happens in a lot of them, actually. It heats things up for the characters and the audience. At least this movie acknowledges that the characters are flawed and that LON doesn't deserve it (unlike... say, CAL from TITANIC).

I feel the same way. Your engaged to someone and this happens, she goes and has sex with another man then leaves you for him.

People who say, well Lon was a great guy he'd get past it and find someone else just don't get it. This is a very traumatic thing to happen to a man or a woman, some people are never the same after something like this happens to them, and may have trust and self image problems for the rest of their lives. Even if they find someone else. If its not someone whose dealt with the same thing and knows how to make it better, they might not ever be the same.

reply

Exactly. Allie was an awful, awful person.

Because she went to find out if the love was still there. It could have went either way. Lucky for them it was still there.

Wouldnt have worked if she would have paused and called her fiance to break it off.

There love was always passionate and heat of the moment and Allie when she was with Noah lived in the moment.

True love

I agree you Pinkdaisy

Everyone wants love to be clean and simple.

That it is certainly not.

If she was going to do the right thing "morally" than she would have tossed the newspaper article on Noah and the house and the trash and just moved on.

But could she have lived with herself if she hadn't reached back to him?

What if she had actually gotten married and carried that regret around with her for the rest of her life?

I'm glad she went back to him and even if it hadn't worked out it would've been the right thing to do.

I wish others could see that perspective as opposed to criticizing Allie for being true to her feelings.

How would you feel if your fiancé did the same thing? I imagine your conversation would be like this:
flicky-3's fiancé: I'm sorry I slept with my ex girlfriend multiple times even though I'm engaged with you. We both realized that we are still in love with each other. It's not my fault that my mother kept her letters from me. I hope you can move on.
flicky-3: Don't worry, I understand. I can't criticize you for being true to your feelings. I'm glad that you reconnected with you ex. It's totally the right thing to do.

reply

But her mother kept the letters!

That's what love is though, I mean, how many of us actually dated and never break up? Even if you're married you may still be divorced. There is no right or wrong in love, just feelings.

How would I feel? I can't put it any more simple than Lon did, those three options. When things like this happen, one can kill, or fight, or just move on.

Oh and, the Mother played an important role here too, because she made that choice what could've been Allie's, if she did not pick Noah.

I think she loved Lon but she wasn't in love with him (there's a huge difference). Noah was the true love of her life...
