Over The Edge 99 Review

This is the next ppv in my collection that is up for review, and im kinda hesitant. I never saw the event, grabbed a dvd copy from a trader a few months back but never could get around to watching it, too busy or just don't wanna get depressed over it. Finally worked up the nerve to do it but ive got a feeling it's gonna be controversial either way. Because of what happened at this event I would probably give the show a default 1.0 on a scale of 1 to 10 IMDB stars just on the principle that Owen died in that idiotic stunt. But im still gonna give the matches impartial ratings and give the final result a score based on match quality.

Live from Kansas City Missouri, Good Ol Jr and The King on commentary.

Match #1

Tag Team Championship Match

Kane And X-Pac Vs D-Lo Brown And Mark Henry

Pac and D-Lo start. They do a little series and Pac goes for an early bronco buster but D-Lo bails. He tags Henry and Pac tags Kane. Henry does a nice foward presslam on Kane, but he nosells and hits Henry with a dropkick. Henry tags D-Lo and they argue about who will fight Kane and Kane just stands there with his head cocked waiting on them. D-Lo is burger meat in the faces corner and Pac talks Kane into tagging. He misses something and D-LO takes over. Henry with the big legdrop on Pac and things end up outside where the heels work him over and Kane goes up top and does a flying body press and takes out all three of them in a nice spot. Back into the ring Kane hits the chokeslam for the pin at 14:06. I liked this one 2 1/2 stars.

Match #2

Hardcore Championship Match

Al Snow Vs Hardcore Holly

Typical hardcore match. Snow uses the fire extinguisher in the face and they fight backstage where they take turns hitting eachother with the props then they fight up into the crowd and down the steps. Back into the ring and Snow goes outside and gets a table. Into the ring and Holly gets a ddt on a chair for 2. Both guys fight over who gets sent into the table and Snow finally wins that by slamming Holly through it and getting the pin at 12:45. Nothing new, just like Valentines Day, Mania 15 and Backlash pretty much. 2 stars.

Now the ppv completely goes to **** as we get a pretaped promo from Heat of The Blue Blazer and we go back to the ring where JR tells the viewers that something happened with the release harness and Owen fell. After 5 or so minutes Lawler comes back to the table and puts it bluntly "it doesn't look good" no video of the accident and Owen is taken out and the crowd gives him a get well applause. In hindsight we know Owen was dead within a few seconds of falling.

Jarrett and Debra are interviewed for the mixed tag and these two are the last people that should of gotten an interview after that travesty. Jarrett says get well and Debra is starting to break up alittle.

Match #3

Mix Tag Team Match

Jeff Jarrett And Debra Vs Val Venis And Nichole Bass

Venis messes up calling Kansasa the show me state in his intro and it's understandable. Jarrett and Venis start then Jarrett tags Bass which means Debra must tag in. Debra tries a sleeper on Bass but that doesn't go so well. Bass tears off her shirt then Jarrett tries a sneak attack guitar shot and Venis gets him with a belly to back suplex setting up the money shot for the pin about 6 minutes in. 1/2 star.

Match #4

Singles Match

Mr Ass Billy Gunn Vs The Roadogg Jesse James

Billy turned on James and X-Pac and struck out on his own for the singles push failure #2 or #3. The x outlaws brawl on the floor and into the ring where Billy takes over. Billy controls most of the match with Roadogg getting token comeback offense here and there but Billy takes over again. Roadogg does shaky punches and the shake rattle roll knee drop. Gunn goes outside and they scuffle with the ref and Billy pops Dogg with the timekeepers hammer but that only gets two. Back inside Roadogg fights back again but Billy unwraps his wrist tape and clotheslines Dogg with it and sets up the fameasser for the pin at 10+. Didn't do much for me. 1 1/2 star.

Match #5

8 Man Elimination Match

The Union Vs The Ministry w Shane McMahon

Survivor Series style match, Mankind, Big Show, Test and Shamrock Vs Viscera, Bossman and The Acolytes. Test and Bradshaw fight it out with Bradshaw winning it with the clothesline from hell about 2 minutes in, he's gone. Shamrock right in and he takes down Bradshaw with the kicks and slaps on the ankle lock for the submission about 30 seconds later. Faarooq comes in and gets caught in the anklelock but Bossman helps him out by pulling him to the ropes, Shamrock won't break and he goes nuts and belly to bellies the ref for the dq around the 4 minute mark. Show steps right in and chokeslams Faarooq for an easy pin about 30 seconds later and then Bossman comes in and gets shoulderblocked out of the ring. Viscera and Bossman double team to knockdown Show for a 2. Show fights back and goes to chokeslam Bossman but Viscera breaks it up. Viscera and Show fight outside and both are counted out I guess even though Viscera wasn't legal, around the 12 minute mark. Bossman takes over on Mankind and they fight outside then back in. Mankind gets a double arm ddt and here comes Socko for the KO at 14:58. Standard elimination match, I give it 2 stars.

Match #6

Singles Match

The Rock Vs HHH w Chyna

Rock has recently fallen out of favor after losing the belt to Austin at Mania 15 and not getting along with HHH. HHH locked him in a casket then smashed it up with a sledgehammer going into this match and Rock has a big cast on his left arm. HHH and Chyna attack in a prematch promo and Mankind makes the save (why should he care?) HHH knocks him out with a pipe then does his entrance and Rock runs in and they brawl. HHH fights back and rips the cast off and attacks the bad arm. HHH destroys the arm then goes outside for a chair and is about to whail on Rock but the ref grabs it and he shoves the ref drawing a dq at 11:41. HHH gets the chair in the face and Rock beats him bloody. Ill go 2 stars. Strange ending.

Match #7

World Heavyweight Championship Match

Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs The Undertaker w Paul Bearer

Special Referee: Shane McMahon

Vince was supposed to be the ref but he was taken out by the Ministry on Heat then his replacement Pat Patterson was knocked out aswell. Shane takes over for the match thus setting up a screwjob win for the Ministry. So at this point in time Vince and Shane are feuding and Shane joins the Ministry and it turns out to be a big farse just to get the belt off Austin as Vince was in on it all along....I think. Taker and Austin do their usual stuff, brawling to the floor and around ringside. Taker attacks the leg and uses the steel steps on it. Shane gives Taker a super slow 5 count on a choke and refuses to make the pinfall counts when Austin tries. Austin has just about had enough and gets in Shanes face, if he touches him he loses the belt. Taker tries sneaking up with a chair shot but Austin stops him and whips him into Shane. Austin hits a stunner but there is no ref. Brisco runs in as the replacement/replacement/replacement referee but it only gets two. Taker wipes him out as Vince hobbles to ringside to take over the referee spot. He gets intoa scuffle with Shane who shoves Vince who backs into Austin and Taker gets a sloppy rollup with a super quick count from Shane to win the title at 22:58. Russorific ending. Ill give it 2 stars. Started out well but I despise these convoluted endings that cheapen the title.

Overall Opinion: A terrible show, just on principles. Owens death really hurt it but despite what other critics say I think JR, King and the rest of the guys did a pretty good job of continuing with the ppv. Im on the fence asfar as cancelling or continuing the show. To me, either one would of been the right thing to do. If they called it after the second match I can just imagine the crowd causing a commotion and a nusance for the town. The only wrestling death im still pissed about because it's the one that REALLY shouldn't of happened. It was a stupid gimmick which was a backstep for Owen, ive heard from quite a few people that said "They should of cancelled the ppv and shame on anyone demanding a refund". Bull****. $20 is alot for a kid, back then anyway to not ask a refund for on a cancelled show. Talking from experience it was always a pain in the ass to talk my parents into allowing me to get a ppv and if I had ordered this show and they cancelled, I would definately want the cable company to nix it from the bill.

Final Score: For the sake of arguement, let's puts Owen's death aside and look at the matches. Honestly the ppv wasn't anything special, if not totally forgettable. If I was to rate this ppv based soley on the matches then on a scale of 1.0 to 10.0 this show gets a 3.1. Without Owen this show would of easily fallen into the void of forgotten ppvs.

I also got this copy a while back with IYH Revenge of the Taker 14 (And I got a free copy of Chris Jericho walls of Jericho...and he is my favorite guy).

Anywho, this death was pointless. This didnt do anything for Owen, it was a step, no, really not even 2 steps, Id say a full 5 steps back for him. Why do this bs, it wasnt needed. He could have easily been a main event guy. It was silly for them to do this to him.

I remmeber, if you liked WWF around...95-97ish, you were either camp Bret/camp HBK. I was always camp HBK. I just personally never liked Bret, I know, SHAME ON ME! Funny thing was, I WAS A decent Owen fan, I def liked Owen > Bret.

Also, one other thing, HBK is a great performer. Ive even read your reviews, and I believe he has 2 5 star Mania matches (I know the one with Angle), a 4 1/2 with Jericho, HBK def can perform...but now, Bret is no sloutch either. WM13...if not for Bret/Austin would have been trash.

Ok im off topic, now continue or cancel the show? Im with you, 20 bucks IS A LOT for a kid, and if I ordered it, it got cancelled 2 matches in, what, tell my parents,"Hey, someone died on the PPV, so we are gonna just let the WWF take this cash from us."

Come on, be serious, Im with you 100 percent.

In the end, this death should have never happened as Owen should have never been the dang blue blazer to begin with (Well...not in 1999!)
