Didn't he cheat on his fiance?

Good guys don't do that. Why didn't he just end it early on instead of sneaking around like some type of criminal? He isn't a good guy AT all.

Plus it you are unhappy with someone else and your heart isn't in it for two years, why stay and torture yourself? I don't understand people like that.

That's the reason I didn't feel any sympathy for his character, and on top of all he makes himself look like a victim and the film want us too cheer for him in the last scenes. I also didn't feel any sympathy for Lisa, behaving like she was the most desireable woman in the world and being so reserved with her feelings and thoughts, so annoying.

I can't stand why Alex could be so fixated to such an immature loser, I only like this movie because of her character, I know that she's supposed to be hated but I got the opposite feeling about her. All my hate goes to the main couple.

I felt sorry for her fiance, she didn't deserve what she got.

YES!!! I wasn't expecting to end up sympathising with Alex but after their climatic encounter at the restaurant where she "explained" to him what she did, I eased up my digust for her. That doesn't make her actions excusable but it does make them a bit more forgivable. She wasn't just some psychotic loser with no life of her own. She was fully aware of just how terrible of a person she was for keeping Lisa and Matthew apart. When all the characters/situations collided, she didn't attempt to lie her way out of it and she did seem genuinely sorry for her actions. Furthermore, since she was an actress and her entire life & profession revolved around assuming [fake] characters/roles, it's understandable how she allowed herself to be caught up in a crazy deluded plot of her own creation.

I don't think so. The filmmakers basically let Alex off at the end and gave her a respectable ending. She redeemed herself the best way she could. However I think the film portrays the characters as they are. It wasn't exactly a happy road to the end for Matt, and between the table scene, and the breakup scene, I don't think the movie was intending for it to be an ending where anybody is completely proud of themselves.

No, she did not. However Matt didn't love her. Maybe he thought he did, but obviously he didn't. You can forgive and like Alex for all that she did, but you can't do the same for Matt?

reply

Wow, I literally never thought about that and I've seen this movie tons of times. I guess it was because so much other stuff was going on, the fact that he so easily cheated never crossed my mind. Ugh. Makes him a bit of a scumbag.

reply

Well in his defense. She did get him drunk plus she was wearing Lisa's clothes and perform and showed up in his bed completely naked.

Do men have no self control?

reply

That is so true! Since Adam and Eve the female gets all the blame for the male's bad behavior. If she cast her lures no one blames him for falling for it. They blame her.

No we don't, sorry! If I'm half-drunk and an attractive, sexy woman who wants my ass climbs into bed with me naked, it's happening sorry. I'm afraid most men would succumb.

Totally agree with last poster.

Once he had ditched the plane to China, he had already concurrently broke it off with the girlfriend in his mind. He was back full time on his "Lisa" mission!

I dunno, after he had his heart broken, that tends to numb a person. He was more likely than not just going through the motions romantically. Almost like he's pretending. Being steered. Then he thinks he sees Lisa again and all that crumbles away and his real feelings take center stage. He's much more impulsive. It was pretty clear his heart wasn't in that relationship with his then girlfriend.

People love to torture themselves. It's like the thing we're best at.

I thought Matt was immature, blindly giving in to impulses with no thought of repercussions or effect on others. He didn't properly cover his failure to show in China, nor his stringing along of Rebecca. Possibly a Narcissist, even a Sociopath.

Also, being born such a good-looking guy, he's probably used to getting what he wants. When he thought Lisa dumped him, Rebecca was the "rebound chick." Plus, the factor of her boosting his career!

Yeah, at the end, they gave Alex an out and some redeeming qualities. One thinks she has repented and will learn from her misdeeds. She even tried to put things right with both Matt and Lisa, a very hard thing to do. Both Lisa and Matt seemed to understand Alex (thus the audience should, too), even perhaps able to forgive her later. Of course her relationship with both was probably over. I'll bet her acting career took off, though!

Alex was pretty rough with Luke, though. But then, Luke had some growing and learning to do, too. Not that he deserved to be manipulated and dumped.

I am not sure Rebecca's motives were all that pure, but she certainly didn't treat Matt badly. She deserved better than a quick brush-off at the airport... so hurried, just so Matt could try to find Lisa before her flight left.

No, I don't think Matt grew or changed at all during the course of these events. I usually like to learn something, along with the protagonist.

Lisa... she's a blank slate to me. I had no idea of her motives for deciding to give in to stalker-Matt, nor if she really loved him. Though, the latter was possibly intentional by the writer, so we could later see, for instance, her big grin as she walks away after Matt's asking her to move in with him. I think we got to know Lisa least of all the main character, except Daniel.

I even thought it amusing that today "moving in" was seen as a huge commitment.

My tag line for the movie would be: "Oh, what a tangled web we weave!"
