So were the cannibals supposed to be high on peyote?

It's been a really long time since I watched this movie. But from what I remember, the characters end up stumbling upon large patches of peyote cacti. I remember one of the characters saying something along the lines of 'no wonder these people are psycho'...referring to the cannibals using peyote.
