reply

wow......anyone that puts this piece of crap movie in their Top 5 must have only SEEN 5 movies. I'm not even joking. It was an embarrassment that only Kevin Costner is capable of. How could any of the actors read those lines with a straight face? Total cornball garbage. Lame.

reply

To alnc524: You must have been the "star" that Costner beat out for the lead in this movie, the way you're bitchin'. Or were you beat out for the role of primary horse manure pile.

Here lies Les Moore-two slugs from a .44 - No less no more.

Loved Open Range. The characters of Boss and Charlie played off one another perfectly, in my opinion. If there was one thing that didn't quite ring true about the film it would be this: no way a beautiful woman like Sue would have stayed single for so many years prior to Charlie coming in to her life.

You're right, no human being would stack books like this.

reply

Have to agree with this whole-heartedly. Open Range suffered from flat characters and horrid dialogue. There are people think that Costner was good in this movie but honestly just about anyone could have pulled of such a crap of a character.

reply

1. The Terror of Tiny Town
2. Shane
3. High Noon
4. True Grit
5. Billy The Kid vs. Dracula
Harry Lime

reply

Overall, I found the movie a bit of a disappointment. While the story was powerful enough, the writing simply fell short. There were only outlines of characters, nothing substantial or memorable. Duvall is indeed a fine actor, and one who has proven himself time and again in the western genre (most notably Lonesome Dove). But not even he could compensate for the poor writing of this film. And Costner? A competent actor but certainly nothing to write home about.

reply

You are entitled to your opinion. You are NOT entitled to debase someone else's opinion.

If we all liked the same movie, there'd only be one movie!

1 - Rio Bravo
2 - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
3 - High Noon

I really can't believe you fellows think Open Range was a good movie. It was horrible.

Here are some of my favourite westerns: High Plains Drifter; For a few dollars more; The good, the bad and the ulgy; Lonsome Dove: The Outlaw Years; The Searchers; Once Upon a time in the west; The Man who shot Liberty Valance.

There are a lot of westerns I like which I can't remember the titles of.

To lastknown: Horrible? You goob! Say ordinary, great or O.K., but don't say "horrible". Good Grief. What did you want, battleships?

reply

Not saying ur wrong, but how could you have a lonesome Dove sequel, and not Lonesome Dove on your list. Lonesome Dove in itself is one of, if not the best, western of all time.

reply

That's more like it, id78!

I think most of the previous posters have only been watching westerns for the last ten years or so - NOT the golden age, by a long stretch.

My list would change from day to day, but - as of right now - I'll go with:

1 High Noon
2 She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
3 For A Few Dollars More
4 The Magnificent Seven
5 Shane

Honorable mentions:

My Darling Clementine
The Searchers
The Big Country
Hombre
Winchester 73
The Gunfighter
The Long Riders
Stagecoach
3.10 To Yuma

Great list, Mike! somehow people nowadays don't seem to realize nor understand the size and the meaning of the old westerns. But that popularity changes with time, I guess. Here are some I'd mention too:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Tombstone
Dances with Wolves
One-eyed Jacks

Good list

reply

You know all these movie lists are great except most of the time its the same movies time and again. What I'd like to see is a western film list that has something I haven't seen before. I live in England and love the western genre, I'm even a member of a living history group (and before you ask, no I'm not over 50 and I don't have a long beard. let's face it most of them are). I'm a 25 year old lover of western movies. Unfortunatly it's also always the same westerns on TV. Heres a short list of westerns that I have been told are great but have never seen due to the fact that they never shown it on TV and haven't released it on DVD here:

The Treasure of Sierra Madre
The Train Robbers
Monte Walsh
Major Dundee
Blueberry
Across The Wide Missouri
Catlow
Cheyenne Autumn
Doc
The Naked Spur
Posse (Kirk Douglas)
The Left Handed Gun
They Died With Their Boots On
Tell Them Willy Boy Is Here
September Dawn
The Life And Times Of Judge Roy Bean
Grayeagle

And TV shows I would like to see:

Into The West
Centennial
Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years
Peacemakers

reply

Treasure Of Sierra Madre isn't really a Western It's more in the Adventure category

reply

1) Red River
2) True Grit
3) Outlaw Josey Wales
4) Stagecoach (1939)
5) Fistful of Dollars

And a few more:
High Noon
The Magnificent Seven
Shane
The Searchers
Paint Your Wagon (Well, I liked it. So what?)

reply

Great list. If I had to pick 5 of those:

Dances with Wolves
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Open Range
Once Upon a Time in the West

A few other gems:

reply

3. Open Range
4. Unforgiven
5. The Shootist (Very underated!)

Just missing the top 5 are:

6. Wyatt Earp
7. The Outlaw Josey Wales
8. Hombre
9. Pale Rider
10. Dances with Wolves

reply

No Order:

Once Upon A Time In The West

The Assassination of the Outlaw jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The Proposition

For A Few Dollars More

Unforgiven

Hon. Mention:

Deadwood

reply

In no particular order and just as they come off the top of my head (NOT to be taken as better than many others I could think, but I'll just STOP at FIVE...)

The Fastest Gun Alive
The Gunfighter
Man on Horseback
The Magnificent Seven
Open Range
(as good a western as has ever been made as far as I'm concerned...)

Here's ANOTHER FIVE that could've come to mind earlier...
The Big Country
Broken Arrow
Wonderful Country
The Tin Star
Wichita
(To me, a better film about Earp than EITHER Wyatt Earp, Tombstone OR My Darling Clementine.)

Then there's
Shane
The Tall Men
Lonely are the Brave
Will Penny

and
High Noon (One of the best westerns - and films - ever made.)

I could probably do it again (and again...) but I've got a show to go watch...

Later...
