Name of the jazz tune during opening / end titles .... ?

Does anybody know the name of the jazz tune that is heard during the opening and end titles? It sounds very familiar to me (it may be a jazz standard or otherwise famous melody), but I can't find out the name of the tune. The titles don't say anything about it.

I also would like to know who is playing. And since there seems to be no soundtrack album at all for "Blood Work": does the tune maybe appear on one of Lennie Niehaus's solo albums?

Come on, somebody *has* to know. :-)

And it can't be so difficult after all, because as I said above, I am quite sure that the theme is not a Lennie Niehaus original and that I heard this melody before in other versions.

Well, if there's no on-screen credit, then maybe it is an original Niehaus composition.

The theme bugged me from the beginning, it seemed something that I should know, so very surprised that no mention in the credits. However there are similarities with the melody in 'speak softly love' as used in 'The Godfather'

Who was the trombone player over the closing credits?

I tracked down some info. Bill Watrous did the trombone solo at the beginning of the film. In addition to Lennie Niehaus, other musicians were George Doering, guitar, and Emil Richards, percussion. I don't know the name of the opening theme or if it appeared on any of Niehaus's recordings.
