What is this? Another movie trying to rip off American consumers?

Well, I guess I got your attention.

Saw the trailer and I wasn't impressed. I read good IMDB member reviews, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth.

My first reaction was "Oh, great. Another capitalist trying to rip off nostalgic fools." I know I am being negative, but is it possible that this movie is nothing more than just a blatant attempt to suck our money to enrich another person? It's just my personal feeling and I like to hear what you guys think. I am just sick and tired of lame works being produced to target nostalgic fools (I am one of them). I enjoyed watching galaxy quest and a lot of other mocu-mentaries. However, this movie trailer just made me thinking “oh shoot. Here comes a crap movie disguised as a hommage to nostalgic 50s’ B movies. bah!

Go see it and your assumptions may be put to rest. It is a GREAT parody, very on target, from the dialogue to the sets to the costumes to the plot. Sure, it wants to make money (name one movie that isn't hoping to bring in $$), but this one is worth the ticket price. It is a well-crafted send off, hardly a "crap movie disguised as homage" to the great old b & w cheesy science fiction/horror flicks. And, having watched the movie several times along side viewers who are both older and younger, I can honestly say it appeals to anyone who loves the old flicks and/or just loves goofy humor.

BAH to you...lol... It looks sweet... :D

This is less of a rip-off movie than all the lame sequels being released, they just blatantly try to lure in the audience who saw the original, without any originality. (see American Wedding and CA2)

The trailer for this movie looks great, but that's just my opinion. I actually can't wait to see it. It actually looks like it will be funnier than Galaxy Quest. Most of the people I talk to about the movie are excited to see it too. It's very independent, it was shot in the hills in two weeks. It doesn't look like they're trying to gank old people for their money. The younger crowd is probably going to fill the theater on this one.

On a side note, most movies that are out right now are a blatant attempt to suck our money. There are a ridiculous amount of shitty movies coming out now that people jump to go see.

Gawd-Schmaude, Kirisute2001, what a grouch you seem to be! Looking at the poster was enough to make me smile with, yes, nostalgia. What's wrong with nostalgia? One would have to be pretty bitter to begrudge the world a little good-natured nostalgia.

Some of these kinds of films can be pretty lame: "Strange Invaders", for instance, but others are fairly good. I liked "Matinee" and "Tremors". I'm looking forward to this film's appearance in my city...

reply

You've got to be kidding.

What movie ISN'T an exercise in capitalism? And let's be realistic here - didn't George Lucas and Steven Spielberg essentially build their empires by targeting "nostalgic fools" like us? You gotta remember, before Georgie started believing his own "Power of Myth" hype, he crafted Star Wars as a throwback to the adventure movies he loved as a kid. Then he struck gold again by doing that same thing again with the Indiana Jones movies.

In all seriousness, if your post is truly representative of your mindset, I think you need to kick back, let it all hang out, and chill a bit. The fact that you're lurking about on imdb.com would seem to indicate you have/had a love of movies. But if you start letting yourself get distracted from the wonders of the experience by analyzing the motivations of the folks who put the images up on screen, well, you're in danger of ruining the experience for yourself - forever.

If the movie's crap, so be it. But judge it on the merits of what's on screen, not what went on behind it.

It's my knee jerk reaction seeing the movie. I know everything we get now days is an exercise in capitalism. The trailer just felt so annoying and when I watched it there was this big fat dude sitting next to me who laughs like donkey through out the preview. I just let it out in this thread. No harm intended. I will probably watch it just to see if it's a crap or not!

I think I am just jealous of the fact that some people can make movies out of almost nothing. And I have had this jealousy brooding in me since the much over-rated Blair witch project.

Just had to write it!

I saw the trailer and, I dunno, it didn't look like it could hold up for a feature length. Maybe if I was drunk and in a rowdy crowd. Or maybe it just works. Dunno if it's worth crossing town to see, but I was mildly curious.

Speaking of making a movie with no budget, there's an interesting book by someone who attempted to do just that: He tried to make the cheapest movie ever, but a real production (i.e., film, not video). Check out "The Unkindest Cut", by Joe Queenan.

reply

Perhaps the fact that you aren't able to do this as well can be attributed to your negative attitude. Perhaps if you saw the admirable creativity and originality that went into a film like 'The Blair Witch Project' you wouldn't be so bitter about the success of others.

Just acquired the DVD that I have been anxiously awaiting ever since I first caught the trailer back in January or so. Too bad it never came to a theatre close to me! Anyhow, it was a great wonderful film that made me laugh in its absurdity! It captured the flavor of so many old cheesy 1950's B-Movies, but definitely set them in it's sights instead of trying to emulate them exactly. How exactly is it ripping anyone off? I knew what I was buying before I ever spent a dime on it! I knew I would love it before ever seeing it, that is why I bought the DVD without having watched the film...and I wasn't disappointed in the least! Listen to the commentary or interviews before you judge the film now that it is on DVD.

reply

Well it certainly is 100 times better and more entertaining than Blair Witch. The Lost Skeleton... is funny. It works as a parody, and much of the dialogue is clever in its simplicity ("Im must ready the preparations"). It is funny, it DOES drag is some spots... but you know what, its better than a lot of crap that Hollywood crams down your throat. Its nice to see filmmakers able to take back the power of making his/her own film. Granted its NOT always great (or even good... your Blair Witch example noted here), but its refreshing to have an option OTHER than the Hollywood mainstream. This movie is funny, and is worth seeing.

reply

How is this movie going to rip off consumers? The trailer shows you exactly what the movie represents and consumers can decide if they like it.

To rip off consumers, the movie would have to represent itself as something different than it is and consumers wouldn't be able to decide if they like the actual movie.

This movie will be loved by the people it's aimed at, and the appeal won't be understood by the people it's not aimed at.

To the devil with me? Not for some considerable time, I trust.

Isn't everything about enriching another person. We pay money for everything, so people try to make things that people will want to pay money for. I don't understand the big "Oh my God! Not CAPITOLISM!" remark, that's the world we live in.

reply

There's not a thing wrong with capitalism. Read some Ayn Rand.

I think some 13 year old is listening to too much Rage Against the Machine.

reply

Well, it could be worse. It could be a 13 year old reading Ayn Rand.

reply

First of all, when did 'capitalism' become a curse word? While no system is without flaws, free-market capitalism has encouraged more human innovation and spurred more progress in the alleviation of human suffering than any any other social philosophy or political ideology in history. Before lashing out against 'big business' and 'corporations' or 'capitalists', people should take a moment to consider just how much safer, healthier and more comfortable modern life is due to some people's pursuit of profit. (This is like Titanic survivors complaining about lifeboats.) Just because someone comes up with an idea that they think they can make money off of, doesn't mean its a bad idea.
Whew! Now, as for "Lost Skeleton...", I'm going to see it tonight and I'm looking forward to it. I have always been a big fan of movies that were "so bad, they're funny". (All Hail MST3K!) However, these movies are so funny mainly because the humor is unintentional. It will be interesting to see if someone can make a movie like this on purpose. As someone pointed out in an earlier post, I think its a lot more of a shameless pursuit of cash to produce yet another sequel to some lame movie franchise that hasn't produced an original movie moment in over a decade than to do something like "Lost Skeleton..." In any case, I'll find out tonight...

I just saw the film, and I honestly haven't laughed that hard and with such frequency in a theatre in a looooooong time. It's rare that a parody is so on target.

The director makes excllent use of the humor-value in poor cuts.

And plus, who can resist a skeleton who is THAT much of a jerk?

reply

OMG, I loved the skeleton. It cracked me up every time it said something. "I sleep now" was funny. I'm so glad somebody made this film, and I'm really glad I saw it with a friend. We made up a lot of our own dialogue. Great movie for fans of MST3K.

Who else thought Drunk Lattis was spot-on stranger in a strange land?

I understand the frustration with Hollywood garbage being expressed by our thread-starter. I go to very few movies any more. Trailers give away too much, and most of it is prefab crap we've seen too often before. What's worse, most of it is explosions and overwrought male leads in torn clothing. Yay for Cadavra! None of that in this movie...

You, apparently, have never been *beep* in the ass by corporate management, refused a job you clearly had the skills for simply because the hiring guy didn't like you, been ripped off, lied to, or generally screwed by a company, had your pension money stolen by book-cookers, been forced to live on pennies a week so a country have a world away could live the high life . . . and the list goes on. Why don't we try looking to the real, practical world rather than fanciful rose-colored fairy tales. I'm sure there were Russian revolutionaries high up in the social ladder who said there was nothing wrong with communism, too, and pointed to Marx as proof.

If you like something and admit you are a nostalgic fool, why not give it a shot? You can always wait until it comes on DVD or video and not pay the fee for a movie in the theatre.

I saw it yesterday and it was very witty. It wasn't stupid at all. The only people I have seen who haven't love it are people who have blown it off as a parody has been than actually watching it.

The script is well written and it is well acted. Better than most "indie" fare out there. The most entertaining film I have seen in awhile, probably more entertaining than Big Fish which was the last movie I saw.

This movie was made for next to nothing - the filmmakers never thought it would see the light of day. if sonypictures hadn't bought it at a film festival, we wouldn't be seeing it now.
i don't know, i'm not a filmmaker, but if i were, i'd want as many people as possible to see my film. by selling it to sonypictures, the filmmakers were at least guaranteed that more people would see it than if they tried to distribute it on their own.
i haven't seen it b/c i live in a medium-sized town, but when i find out it's playing in bigger cities near me, i'm getting a carload of people to go with me. the dialogue was truly clever; the whole movie looks like a scream.
the fact that a fat guy sitting next to you laughed doesn't mean it's going to suck - trust me.
if it doesn't look like your flavor of vodka, don't see it. if it interests you, see it. personally, it looked way more interesting to me than most of the other "crap that hollywood crams down our throats," as another poster put it so well.

reply

I saw LSoC at the Nuart in LA and the cast and crew came and had a Q and A session w/ the audience. NO ONE is going to make ANY money off of this movie. Even if it were made by some magical socialist movie-distribution company, it would still take no money to make, regardless of what foolish preconceived notions you may be operating under about all movies being capitalist ploys made to suck our souls and money. So please, give it up.
THE PRODUCERS WISH IT TO BE KNOWN THAT NO UNASSUMING AMERICAN DRONES WERE RIPPED OFF IN THE FILMING OR PRODUCTION OF THIS FILM.

so yeah.
