Okay, but couldn't Steve just have said that Queen was one of his clients who he was doing some pro bono work for? Most lawyers do that in the States as a tax dodge, right?
Anyway, you'd have thought that with Queen Latifah as executive producer, she might have pointed out some of the more racist elements. Fair enough if people don't approve of her in the film because of how she was dressed or how she spoke, but for Christs sake it was like she'd walked in on a Klan meeting! Openly telling stories of how you had slaves when you were younger is bad enough, but to a black woman in the USA? That's just asking to get your head kicked in!
Basically this was on of those films where no one comes across in a favourable light. The white people were stupid and prejudice, and the black people were... stupid and prejudice. When Steve Martin goes to that club near the end, I was cringing so much. Eugene Levy didn't have any trouble getting in, nor did Joan Plowright, so why did Steve have to dress like Tweener from Prison Break? It was bad writing! And the fact that all the people that were focused on in the club were either whores, on drugs, or blatant back-room criminals! It was stupid! And that Widow guy... clever enough to put the blame for a crime on another person, but stupid enough to pull a gun out in public! Give me a break!

Well, I'm black ... well ... mixed race b/w, but obv look black (!) and i absolutely loved this film when it came out in the cinema n then on dvd! i certainly didn't find it offensive, all it did was SHOW people being racist, it certainly didn't promote racism.
this film was composed brilliantly; the racism in it was to show the pathetic reality we live in.
