This movie had the potential to send a great message, but it sent a terrible one.

When dealing with conflict, there are three ways you can handle it: Passive, aggressive, and assertive. Assertive is always by far the best way, but Sandler never becomes assertive. He's passive at the start, and aggressive at the end. The movie seems to be saying aggressive is the best way.
