People always saying "grow the *beep* up!" need to grow the *beep* up. If being "grown-up" means being a dick like you - no thanks. You sound like one of those pretentious "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" hardass types that can often be found online. Are you even real? People aren't perfect. Harvey Pekar was a real person, with real flaws. Go watch James Bond or something, since apparently according to your distorted view of reality, he's how "real/normal" people act. I guess that's the fairy tale world you live in, where no one has to struggle with their awkwardness or other limitations.
I related to Harvey, so I though this movie was great...people like him/us need hope that we can be somebody and matter in this world. And I was inspired by his friend, who seemed so proud of his being a nerd. Inspired me to try and take back the term "loser". Since I feel like I'm what people call a "loveable loser" :-) Not being arrogant, just honest. Self knowledge and self awareness are great things. More people need to do that - own who you are. A little honesty never killed anyone. Anytime I hear the phrase "fake it 'til you make it", I want to punch someone in the face. And I'm like the least violent guy ever lol
For the poster that said a negative attitude gets you nowhere... Maybe so. Which again is why this movie's so great, gives people hope in a realistic, non-Hollywood BS kind of way where challenges are overcome by the magic of luck and self reliance and everyone's perfect and normal by the end. However, isn't it ok, even normal, even God forbid healthy, to feel down at least some of the time? Should we all just be shiny happy people all the time instead?
Seriously, people like that creep me out. The ones who act the most well adjusted are the ones we should be most concerned about. I'm sure most politicians and cult leaders act pretty charismatic and well adjusted, too (at least on the surface). We know how that often turns out. Yet no one ever says that. We still blindly follow anyone who flashes that charismatic smile, putting them on a pedestal. Humanity's a funny thing. As Harvey said "ordinary life is pretty complex stuff." If the world had more people like Harvey, it'd be a better place. If nothing else, at least he's honest.
I'm sure after my "loser post" you want to hurt me now. Keep fantasizing, big boy.
