I found the entire family and almost every character detestable...

Well, maybe detestable is too harsh, but it's hard to find any decent character in this series.

John and every member of his family/extended family are just a bunch on selfish, self-absorbed, morally-bankrupt, spoilt jerks. Not one person is that decent - I found his daughter so annoying that I ended up fast-forwarding through her scenes. Oddly enough, the ex-wife was the most bearable of all because she did not try to hide who she was.

John was just an indecent man who screwed anything that walked his path. I can not believe a man in that high brow society would be allowed to maintain his position. I know a storyline was trying to find ways to discredit him, but come on, this guy's behaviour was a bit much.

Then you have the QC who can sit by and have this guy screw all that crosses in path, yet she's always at the ready to jump in his bed.

Ugh, this show!

It was not too bad, but they went to far with the ridiculous back stories.

Please note that I've only seen the first 2 episodes.

I Agree with your review. I know it's fiction, but it's hard to believe that a writer would create a plot (episode 1) where a sitting judge is having sex with one of the attorneys involved in a case he is hearing, while at the same time insisting that his daughter is above the law. In episode 2, our morally superior judge takes great delight in having a affair with a married woman.

I'll credit Martin Shaw with being a fine actor, able to play both this preening peacock, and then his polar opposite, Inspector George Gently.

The only person without a flaw so far is "Monty" -Simon Ward. I like him. He seems very just and unbiased.. . .. .so far.
