No modern weapons? O....kay....

What the hell was that all about? Can't bring modern weapons with you? Great idea genius.

Since of course their cultural and language differences were going to attract attention, it sure would have been nice to be able to defend themselves.

That decision sure turned out to be costly pretty quick, too.

I suppose ITC didn't want to jeopardize the historical outcome of the siege/war by introducing modern weapons, which the English could have procured in their favor. Seems to fall in line with Marek's momentary anger regarding the implications of Professor Johnston's promise to provide his English captors with a new weapon in the form of Greek fire. Perhaps the book offers a better explanation as I've only seen the film.

Mostly it's because they are not supposed to do anything that might eff up the timeline.

Basically... in the book, one of the military guys who escorts them back smuggles some grenades and one goes off after a knight on a horse beheads him and as their time machine reappears the active grenade he didn't have time to throw rolls into their time machine and blows it up.

The Professor and anyone going back is not even supposed to leave the machine. It's strictly observation only... the Professor just couldn't help himself.

The movie murders the book. The book is still one of my favourites, and my favourite Crichton book at least.

Trust me....the book poops over this over-simplifed piece of crap.

I don't post on IMDB too often but after watching this attempted adaptation on Netflix, I feel compelled to respond and agree.

Actually, you were far too kind. This could likely be a contender for the worst film adaptation ever. The novel does so many things well, and the movie pretty much got everything wrong. I don't rate movies lower than 5 very often (I consider a rating of 4 or less to mean "severely flawed" and I rarely watch movies that meet that description), but this one deserves a 2 or maybe even a 1. Did it do ANYTHING well? Did it get ANYTHING right? Did it capture ANY of the great moments or scenes of the book?

The movie was a catastrophic failure on every level.

I haven't read the book so I am not aware of how bad it ruins the book, but sounds like it did. I do understand the premise of not bringing back weaponry to the past, but that is too much in theory and reality. Even if a modern gun made it back, they didn't have the technology to reverse engineer it. I think it domed the mission to not have modern weapons.

It seems like people who read the book are much more harsh on the film than other viewers. Other viewers are no doubt the larger number, though, which may explain why the film is the way it is.

you can't bring modern weapons in a time machine...haven't you seen The Terminator?

lol

Fiery the angels fell, deep thunder rolled around their shores, burning with the fires of Orc
