Why cant anyone but the Americans save the planet?!

Seriously...

reply

Because that's our job, didn't you know that?

or

Because know one else has enough money to do it. Not even the Chinese; they loaned us all of their money.

or

Dude, it's just a movie; and an American one at that. A British movie would have had an eccentric Brit scientist kludge together a device to get to the Earth's core. A Japanese movie would have a Godzilla or Gamera dig a hole to the Earth's Core. In this case Hollywood put together a movie for a mostly American audience so it had American heroes.

Finally, while The Core is not real strong on logic or science it did make sense that as Americans caused the problem, they were responsible for fixing it.

"Because know one else has enough money to do it."

This, until recently, is really a strong, legitimate reason. It's not necessarily the know how, or the ambition, which I'm sure many countries would have in situations like this, but pretty much until the last 10 years or so, the U.S. was basically the only country in the world that could really fund this kind of world saving stuff. Only 3 countries, (2 until very recently) have put a person in outer space. Many countries just don't have the budget to do it, or are very behind in technology.

Yeah, Americans made the movie, so that's what they're going to show, but realistically, Americans had the MONEY. They had the budget for scientists, equipment, and technology to pull these feats off.

reply

Unfortunately, as we see with the slow dismantling of NASA, America's days of being the worlds most forward thinking and technologically advanced country are over.

I think the first person to walk on Mars will be Chinese.

Also let's think about one thing. The US education system is said to suck, but for some reason the most brilliant minded scientists come from the US universities. Either US born or foreigners have gone to places like MIT or Caltech.
And those brilliant scientists that are trained somewhere else usually come to work in the US.
Science doesen't work without the funding, and the US still has the edge on that.
Why the education system sucks is because of the non-private sector, which on the other hand would need tax money, which is away from the private sector. And state owned schooling, while it might be more fair, is always behind the private sector for the simple reason of not being able to think enough outside the box.
Seriously, like the free health care in northern europe. If you have a broken arm, sure you get to fix it fast and almost for free. But have some more exotic ailment then usually doctors are baffled or always treat it as something more common.

Then again this movie is scientifically speaking complete BS but that has been already discussed elsewhere.

By the way, I'm non-american and I'm not as much defending a privately owned school system as much as saying that it's not the great devil like most europeans like to think of it.
Yes, the US can produce the most uncivilized western people but it can also produce the most civilized.

If it were British it would be James Bond, driving a german car, using japanese electronic devices.

Since it's an American movie, and the market is mostly american...and America caused the problem, America is fixing it.

What I find interesting is, that here we have a situation of America *beep* something up... and saying " ya, we did it, let's fix it." instead of." ya we did it, but *beep* all if we'll admit to it, let someone else fix it."

This is a GOOD thing. If America actually did this In the real world, it would be a sign that it is becoming a mature nation. Isn't that what we want this country to do?

At the present moment America is a half drunk spoiled teenager, that managed to get the keys of the Lambho, with the rest of the planet hooked up to the rear ... driving around and causing havok, saying " hey, where did that old lady pop out from?"

Maturity is good.

PS: I am American, so please spare me that " you jus jelous and hate America" nonsense.

PPS: The last was not directed at the person I am responding to. it was a general comment to people that are all gung ho about the countrty, and refuse to acknowledge sometimes we mess things up, we are not all always perfect. And when we do, we should clean up after ourselves.

reply

Well since it was the idiotic Americans that screwed the planet in the first place, it's only fair that they clean up their own mess.

reply

Because the Americans are the ones making the movies about saving the planet. When other countries make movies about impending global apocalypse, their countries can start saving the planet. It's not selling out. It's logic. An American-made movie is going to have Americans saving the world from impending doom. A British-made movie is going to have Brits saving the world from impending doom.

How about instead of being bitter at Americans for always saving the world in movies, be bitter at the other countries who don't make their own end-of-the-world movies. :P

That said, we're far from the only ones saving the world, even by cinematic standards, as others have pointed out. ;)

I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

American studios make films starring American heroes for primarilly American viewers,Americans have a lot of pride in their country and watching a film were their awesome government put together an awesome team who awesomely save the planet makes them them feel like the United States of Awesome.

Ok, so we've established that a country's film will have heroic people from that country saving the world.

My point is why? Why can't a country's audience accept other nationalities saving the planet. Are people that stupid that they can only like a film if it features people the same race/nationality as them?

If this is the case then those people are really simple.

In real life who cares who saves the planet, as long as it gets saved. It's not a competition, people.

People aren't that stupid that they can only like a film if it features people the same race/nationality as them no. But Americans are.

And yes... Americans are really simple.

reply

Because Americans are supremely arrogant. It's why they tell you they won World War 2. It's why they tell you theirs is the greatest nation on Earth. It's why they require remakes of original foreign films to be made for their benefit. It's why we have an American flag on the moon.

For any other country to save the world would be sacrilegious to Americans.

reply

It's not like it's a huge budget movie or something, it's a freakin low budget movie that not's meant to be taken very seriously. Why in Bollywood movies are almost all the people Indian? Gee i don' know, same with Japanese movies, and British movies that i watch a lot of. More Americans spend time watching movies/tv than any other country. Also please don't stereotype over 300 million people unless you have met every single one of them. I'm sure you don't like when people stereotype your country. Besides they're are plenty of other movies with other country's saving things, in fact using other governments, military powers/country's is getting more popular since the internet came along and everyone can show how mad they are at the million dollar movies they watch.

Because we have the money, the technology, Steven Hawking, NASA, and Bruce Willis- who always saves the day!

And we may be arrogant and "simple" but we have contributed more than our fair share to the rest of the world... Electricity, mass production lines, medicine, computers, flight, the internet and other countless inventions that make all the things we do today possible.
Ponder this:
At a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?"
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and
from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?"

reply

Well...

Steven Hawking is British.
LHC in Cern (the most complex tech on earth) is in Swiss and they also made the world wide web.
Bruce Willis was born in Germany to a German Mother and American father

But NASA is all american and that is something to be proud of, as well as the mass production.

Electricity is not invention it's discovery and was discovered long before america was found.
William Gilbert was an English, Otto von Guericke was German, Robert Boyle was Irish, Stephen Gray was English, Nikola Tesla was Austrian/Hungarian and later in life American and Ben Franklin was American.

Not even free speech or democracy are American inventions.

American settlers brought free speech to the America from europe.
But I guess they had free speech during the stone age as well.

Iceland was democratic in 930, practiced free speech and is the oldest functioning parliament in the world, but was not the first democracy in the history.

Great post, bmson.

One thing I'd have put differently:

But NASA is all american and that is something to be proud of

Almost, but not quite. NASA, for all its amazing achievements, wouldn't have happened without the German scientists the US "acquired" after WWII under Operation Paperclip.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

For example, do French movie makers make alot of movies with French actors that also happen to be american and save the world? Or do they make the French actors play French people that save the world?
