I am so sorry if you are one of the people who loved it, but really, I didn't liked at all.
1) The character of the boy... His acting... too bad.
2) The voice over of the boy... even worse.
3) The story... almost a cliche in Argentina. Every film is about the same.
I think we have better films here, but, it does not have the advertising Valentine had.
Maybe if spanish is not your mother language, the acting sounds better, but It seemed to me like a boy reading a book at the school, without any kind of acting.

And yes... the music is superb but... Agresti forgot to mention it in the credits, too bad.

Just saw the movie and love it. I'm also an spanish speaker and for me that's precisely the magic of the movie....the way Valentin talks, in his own argentinian accent with his own and particular phrases. What a cute little boy!!!!!!

Whole film just played on ooh, what a cute little boy cliches...the slight oddball, with puppy-dog eyes and geeky glasses, who likes spaceships etc. It's the story that's important, and that didn't go anywhere. All the characters were just stock types. I'd wanted to check out an Argentinian film so I rented it out. I'd also like some suggestions for more decent movies.

No feelings? I have feelings for REAL things, not this sterotyped, obvious cliché. You start by insulting (bad start), but ... do you see real movies? Do you have any cultural background filmwise?

well, i don't know why u think may be u don't speak spanish soo it's a little complicated , the spanish is a rich language , they have a lot of words about a lot of things , ok well when an american says allways fuc k , we have a lot of words expressing different things that the yankees call *beep* and it means diferent things i dont know , when you watch the movie i think that the subtitle are very poor because english is not too rich as a language, it's a simple language

well and the acting of rodrigo is superb , he express a lot of "ternura" (i don't know how to say in english)

the songs in the are , LAURA VA of spinetta luis alberto, he is one of the most talented musician in the spanish rock i think....all the songs are of the 60 , EL EXTRAño de pelo largo and i don't remember anymore :P

I have to agree with you that sometimes the translation does not do the film any favours as there are many funny phrases in Spanish that are not translated colloquially enough...as I understand both languages I can say this. I couldn't help thinking while I was watching the film that I could have translated it better. Unfortunately they are translated into a kind of international English, probably by a non-native that has learned English from a textbook.

What I don't agree with is that English "is not as rich a language, it's a simple language" If you learned real English (which is English spoken in whatever part of the English-speaking world) you would find out that it is far from simple and can be very rich. I can only speak from my own part of the world. Scotland principally, which has a vernacular that is very rich, far from simple and can be very funny. The same goes for England, Wales, Ireland and I'm sure every other part of the English-speaking world.

So Nacho, when you've learned some "real" English come back and tell that it's simple or "not rich" and then you just might have case.

I didn't like the movie either. I'm a native spanish speaker as well, and found the movie to be lacking a plot and hysterically trying to be cute in every single scene.

The scenery, by the way, is the only good thing on this movie, imho, they really did their homework and managed to get some 1960's typical cars to show us.

That, and, maybe I'm the first person to notice it, but this film is not only trying to copy the "Cinema Paradiso" formula, but the "La Vita e Bella" one as well with its aiming-to-be-pro-semitic dialogues with the piano guy, and the kid's father beautiful girlfriend.

I really like the movie. it is better than the Hollywood movies that you can see in the cinemas...but I respect the opinion of the others...
I think the argentinian cinema is the best of all latinoamerica...living in Miami I can try all the other ones...

So recommend some good Argentinian titles...I'm not sure where to look. I've seen Nine Queens (isn't that Argentinian?), and Valentin (which I really don't think is worth watching).

despite of our differences (since Im like the #1 Fan of Valentin, and Agrestis work) I can suggest a few titles to you. Buy first I may point out that most of the greatest latinamerican films, may be considered by you as boring, static or without complicated plots, just as this one. That is (and im not intending to criticize other cultures) because us latinamericans are more about characters. Maybe for your likes, nothing happens in this story, but for me the main action is the one that occurs inside the characters, and in this case its Valentin inocence and humor against such dramatic situations what make us all Valentin lovers.

Another thing that you may be missing is dialogues, I agree with all those who say that the translation is awfull but it is because there are some phrases, gags, metaphores and ways of behavior that get lost in translation.

Perhaps you should give us an example of what you consider a great movie so we can recommend. IN the meantime I could suggest garage Olimpo (argentina, Marcos Bechis), Historias Minimas (Argentina), carandiru (Brasil), Havana Blues (Cuba, Spain, France) La comunidad (Spain, Alex de la Iglesia) and Mar adentro (spain, Alejandro amenabar)

There you have a list of movies that go from phsicologicall dramas to black humor (dunno if thats the correct term in english)

To your point, Latin American cultural themes seem to layer out all the "extra" drama that American movies contain. I am not a native speaker although I am of Puerto Rican descent and although I had to watch with subtitles, I completely understood got the gist of what the story was focusing on. Latin Americans tend to focus on feelings, romance, family, etc. and so for someone with this background, this movie focuses on what is "important" and it seems deliberately simple and without all the excess stuff that movies made in the U.S. seem to have. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of American movies, but this was a refreshing change, with a movie focusing on the basics of human emotion, with a little boy pointing out everything that adults fail to notice in themselves.
