Don't know how anyone can like this

I felt sick most of the time, and maybe if you look at it from anuva angle u cud say that the editing and filmaking was good, but how can someone possibly like this , and also how can the persoon who wrote it think of something like this, they must be so *beep* up. Obviously the film makers just wanted to try and make the most notorious and controversial violence movie ever.

reply

its called art, and how can anyone not like it.

Art? I dont know about that, the art "got" heavy overshadowed by the gore/violence. lets face it, most people came to watch this film for the gore/violence. It delievered and I'm satisfied with that. Its memorable, but artistic, thats debatable.

sorry I tuned you out

reply

I watched it because i was interested in the plot and from what i heard the characters, the gore had no part in my interest. I still consider this one of my favorite films and keep it in my dvd collection. It is a piece of art, gory or not.

I thought the gore and violence was too ridiculous to take seriously. The effects were horrible, and the plot was just silly.

reply

It's not to be taken seriously. I think the shaky CGI was intended. The part where Jijii takes his clothes off cracked me up. I laughed so hard...

when movies start showing scenes of children getting raped and murdered and then call it likable art then dooms day is not far away at all. I am not refering to this movie in particuler but films are heading that way. i.e. a serbian film. August underground trilogy are really brutal and only right minded people would judge such movies with sheer dislike and not merit them as artistic master pieces.

reply

This film is actually a criticism of exploitative and overly violent cinema, such as the films you just listed.

How can anyone like watching captions and not the movie? The only reason I watched this was for the gore. Otherwise, this is a piece of crap movie. If it was in English, I probably would of enjoyed it more. Technology is getting better, but it would be better if they would just make the movies automatically just the actors speaking the native language when played in other countries instead of this stupid caption crap.

If I want to read, then I will read a book, that is why movies are movies, and books are books. There is no such thing as hybrid movies or books, and doing this caption is getting annoying. People saying these Chinese, Japanese, and Korea movies are better than the USA horror are nuts. All these movies rated higher in other countries are more laughable than the USA ones.

I don't go for comedy. I go for horror. Mixing them up with both is stupid.

I am a gore watching freak!!!

If it don't have it, it isn't worth the watch.

The only movies that should be watched dubbed are Italian movies like the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood Dollars Trilogy or Django (these movies were filmed silent with actors speaking their native languages - numerous dub tracks were made in various languages). Other than Italian movies, something is definitely lost when you are not listening to the actor speaking in their his or hers own voice.

Although I will say that I wish I spoke Russian so I don't have to read the subtitles for Tarkovsky movies - he often has characters speaking in long monologues and it is easy to miss what the character is saying if you're not 100% engaged. That being said, I couldn't possibly imagine watching his movies with an English dub track. The sound of the Russian language just fits those movies so well - you're completely changing the movie if you remove the Russian.

If I remember correctly, there are a couple of lines of English in Ichi the Killer - you would loose this in the dubbed version, I imagine. Movies like Breathless (which has an American character speaking French) or Band of Outsiders (another movie with a couple lines of English dialogue) also illustrate why you should watch movies in their original languages.

The more foreign language films you watch, the easier reading subtitles becomes.

reply

I'm sorry, but what? This is a truly ignorant statement.

reply

Not that I don't respect other people's opinions, but seriously? The reason people say foreign movies are better than American movies is because it's mostly true. I'm a born American. And as much as I love American film, foreign films are so much more gripping. (For the most part)

And I honestly don't understand people who say they can't watch a movie with subtitles because they don't want to read, they just want to watch a movie. I've always found it very simple to follow the subtitles and still watch the whole movie. You can easily do both things at once. It's not as if you have to focus on the words and miss the action.

I, myself actually watch most movies with subtitles. Even all the English movies that I understand and have seen before. I like it much better with the subtitles, so that I pick up on every little detail. You'd be surprised how much you can actually miss without them. I know a lot of other people who do this too, but of course not everyone would enjoy that.

And I agree wholeheartedly with the Captions being better than Dubbed movies. I absolutely cannot watch a movie with an English dub. It's dreadful to watch a movie where some other person is reading the script, and it's not that actor's voice. The person reading cannot capture that actor's emotion and it sounds so stupid.

Anyway, everyone's entitled to feel how they want. Just my opinion in the matter.

reply

then every film is art. Batman & Robin is art.

reply

I don't think they wanted to make the most notorious film ever. I mean almost all the violence in it is more like comic book violence, it's so OTT that it isn't so much shocking as it is hilarious.

reply

Agreed. Kakihara was one of my favorite Sado/Maso antiheroes. It definitely is hillarious watching some of the over the top violence (face sliding down the wall....nuff said!). In contrast to movies like "Martyrs",the violence in Ichi was surreal and comic book-ish. I loved this movie.

reply

It's actually a very dark comedy. If you can stomach the violence and gore, there's actually a lot of humor in it and the characters are very intriguing.

reply

Very true, I laughed out loud several times, especially for the final "battle". Excellent film.

reply

I adored it! It is surely a masterpiece. And okay..Takashi Miike is the gore master! If you watch Takashi Miike you must be prepared for those scenes

reply

[deleted]

In all fairness, is Takashi Miike really the "gore master"? A lot of his more famous films (Audition, Visitor Q, Box etc.) aren't really that gory at all - but disturbing on another level.

I wouldn't call him that. He sure does make slow, very painful torture scenes though. "Torture master" might be more appropriate.

reply

it doesnt have much, but i think youre forgetting some very important scenes if you think audition has no gore

reply

Vinushka, how is having your foot sawed off not gore? Or for that matter, what about when Asami cuts off her dance teachers head? Visitor Q, well having sex with a dead girl, murder, beatings, rape, not gore? The only film of his that I can think of that really did not have much gore was One Missed Call.

Sorry about my spelling, it is not my strong suit. =)

reply

You need to watch more Miike movies then... he has a bunch that don't have tons of violence in them (Bird people of China, Ace Attorney, Big Bang Love, etc...).

He does do some disturbing/violent movies but he has such a HUGE list of movies hes made, that you might be surprised how many of them are NOT like Ichi The Killer or Audition.

reply

I watched this because of the all the talk on its violence, and so true it was. I also watched irreversible just after which was just morbid.

reply

[deleted]

Yeh I don't disagree with you there, Irreversible is more disturbing, even though it has less gore, it is more psychologically traumatic. That infamous felt like it would never end, the camera was so perfectly positioned, almost like you were a voyeur in which you could see the expressions on the girl's face which was almost unbearable to carry on watching throughout.

reply

You are a glutton for punishment! Irreversible is one of the most menacing films I've seen. You should have watched them the other way around and then Ichi might have made you laugh.

op has issues...ichi had great characters, story, direction, was different...what else could you want,,,it was a great escape, truly great cinema...and kakihara was nothing nice!

reply

The characters are interesting, the setting beautiful, the cinematography decent and the plot semi-original.

I guess that is how.

reply

Better than remakes, sequels, and 3D, like movies here in America nowadays, right?

reply

I can see why you didn't like this movie but watch it again, Ichi the Killer is one of those movies you have to watch twice before you can understand or like it.
I actually thought this movie was hilarious...except for that one scene with the hooker(Myu Myu was it?) that was pretty traumatic.

But if you think this is bad, you should really avoid Takashi Miike's other films - let alone films like the Guinea Pigs, Irréversible, Men Behind The Sun, August Underground, Cannibal Holocaust etc.

Ew. Cannibal Holocaust, now there's a movie I never want to see again!

Yeah I heard about that, read some reviews & I can't bring myself to watch it. I know one sociopath though that wasn't moved by CH in any way or form, like she was emotionless.
