Did I understand it correctly: the boyfriend was very caring, supportive thru the illness until Jennifer mentioned committment, and then he took off?

That's what you guys thought?? I thought she decided to leave him.... maybe I'm wrong, but that's just what I took from the movie.

Maybe he feared getting into deep with the relationship, when it would ultimately result in her death. Maybe he was afraid of getting hurt by loving her. I haven't seen the second half of the movie though as it is on right now, but this is my possible explaination.
