Minor things I can't forget about Deus Ex :-)

Here are some tiny details I never forget about Deus Ex, and I normally have a bad memory...

- The code for Alex's storage locker is "2001". I remember this as 2001 is one of the years I played Deus Ex in.
- jcd/bionicman. 'nuff said.
- nsf001/smashthestate, code for the NSF terminals on the first map.

I love the things the MIBs say.

"Cold. Cold and dark. It goes on forever."
"Some of these people are androids... watch the way they move!"
"Visual contact has been lost. Don't worry, we'll find him."

Other priceless quotes:

"I spill my drink!"
"A tourist with a deathwish! Better just throw yourself in the canal."
"Scanning. Area."
"A BOMB?!"
The bums talking about The Man Who Was Thursday sculpture.
"Hooray, my kitties! Now they can go out and play and not get eaten!"
"See how easily our technologies turn on us? The more power you think you have, the more quickly it slips from your hands."
The entire discussion with Morpheus.

- 'I was in your class at the academy. You probably don't remember!'
- 'Could we ask a big, big favor?' 'Sure'
- 'Please give me a weapon a move out of the way!'
'You can have my pistol'
'That will be adequate'
- 'Iron and copper. The statues copper on an iron frame, right?'
- '910. I'm catching up, Gunther'
- Chasing Decker, Erin and Young.
- Setting up Anna's death by letting her follow me into a corridor filled with blinking batches of death aka LAM's!

- "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?"
- "Sticks and stones."

- "I forgot to give Manderley my resignation."

Goddamn this game is one the greatest ever. Reading these takes me back to some good times...
The amount of all those great little details is astounding. Loads of great lines & dialogue. And the music is just perfect.
Like in the first Paris scene, where you meet Aimee, the crazy woman who's lost three of her cats to the greasels. I remember her lonely ramblings for some reason made an impression on me then.

"I didn't know...How could I know?"

And then later on, after you've carefully crept past the guards, soothed by the music, you find a book on a table in the house opposite the catacombs, with the poem in it; "Petals of Twilight" -

"...And it is told that he made his way
through their streets
at night, crawling through their many
windows and crouching in
their gardens, moving
through the sewers beneath their
cobbled roads and
slipping over their railings.

Watched by their cats and the roosting
pidgeons of their city,
yet wary of their slumbering dogs, he
went. They would not see
him, nor wake as he drew near,
but would only shudder, softly calling
out the names of their
gods in sleep.

Restless, they tossed as he passed
under the window like an
errant lover fleeing dawn.

And by morning light he was gone, away
from that place, and
moved on to another world."

The entire intro sequence and Illuminati ending are stuck in my head, but more specifically Page saying "We've had to endure much you and I". I find myself repeating that to colleagues after an especially hard day.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?! -This is probably the one moment in any game I've ever played that I'll never forget, no matter how hard Alzheimer hits me. It's also a running gag among friends whenever we sneak on each other.

"You will find no one to help you here. Beth DuClare has been dissected and placed in cryonic storage." (OK, I generally remember the line only up to the word "dissected"), the message you get from Icarus in the Paris Mansion.

"Gene Rodenberry was a mason, Star Trek was created to prepare us for the New World Order."

reply

I've played Deus Ex thirty times. Never does Icarus say that. Nice try though.

MURDER ME!!!

reply

Yes, he does. When you enter Nicolette's bedroom (one of the locked doors on the second floor) if I remember correctly. Not that long after he said "What are you looking for?".

You can hear it in this youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3cO1l_U7RQ

Did the phone conversation in that remind you of Icarus / Daedelus? Pretty much the same voice effects. I wanted him to call again an go, "I NOW HAVE FULL ACCESS TO YOUR SYSTEMS."

"A bomb's a bad choice for close combat." -- JC to junkie in Battery Park subway station.

"Well, since that makes you my new boss, take a good look at Manderley's dead body. Consider that my resignation. I don't have time to write a letter." -- JC to Walton Simons when escaping UNATCO.

Maggie Chow's cat being the only neutral animal tagged as an enemy by your character's IFF system.

The philosophical debates with Morpheus in Morgan Everett's hideout (one of the best conversations in the game!)

Pretty much all of Icarus/Helios's dialogue.

- TAWK TA ONE A DA GUYS IN GREEN. UNATCO'S RUNNIN THE SHOW. - nyc riot cop

- the conversation between amos (the mercenary) and jackson (nsf guy) in the statue of liberty has some good lines:
MERCENARY THUG
I wonder. How's a guy with a tattooed forehead get to be an NSF colonel? Pardon
me, but back in Alabama we wouldn't let a man who wears earrings plan a military
operation.
NSF TERRORIST
I'd watch what I say about JoJo. He's got a temper.
MERCENARY THUG
He's a punk and he's gonna get us all killed.
NSF TERRORIST
The NSF is strong because it represents everyone's interests.
MERCENARY THUG
Yeah, yeah.
-the girl with filben at the beginning: *when you buy bullets from her* "put a slug in the commander's head for me. he's the reason my brother's dead." then, when you buy darts: "someone should stick the commander full of these things like a roast pig".

baby can you dig your man?
he's a righteous man.
