I always saw the man loosing faith and finding it again was a subplot to the actual thrilling happenings in the movie. Yes it is a part of the story, but not sure that that would turn people off as it's more about the thrill as it unravels and the suspense of what will happen, the faith part falls in line with certain things happening but to me it's not a full on Faith Category Movie that would put someone who doesn't like Christianity against it. I'm thinking some has a lot to do with age - I'm 40 now, like ET was when I was a young child, this was thrilling to me hitting all my senses in new ways that were also believable fir my time. And as I've seen people post who were young when it came out it would have been like ET was to me. I wonder if the younger crowd seeing it now has been so immersed with way out there action thrillers that this may seem slow to then or not the CGI they are used to ur even perhaps bc it does have a plot & so many thrillers now have such a small plot and to me are just killing and gore and nudity without having a true story that pulls you in and keeps your attention. I don't understand the hate, I've loved it since I first saw it and wish I would have seen it at the movies! I remember I lied the preview when Bo woke her father up and said "There's a monster outside my room, can I have a drink of water?" Just so calmly.
