I thought it was better, but mainly because of the addition of Johnny Depp.

Desperado AND El Mariachi is better than this. Depp makes this movie watchable, at least.

reply

I disagree. Once upon a Time In Mexico is the finale, highlight and best entry in the series...

reply

Agreed. I thought this movie was a mess and easily the weakest in the trilogy. Johnny Depp's character was the one redeeming thing about it really. If only he'd been in Desperado instead.

Also, i didn't mind the soundtrack, I'll give it that.

Johnny Depp and the awesome character of Sands made this movie better imo.

I like once upon a time in Mexico more but in my opinion the "gunfights" is better in desperado.

Who agrees that using capital letters in the topic heading is just so lame?

If you're refering to the previous movie (El Mariachi), then the reason for that is because El Mariachi and Desperado aren't TRUE sequels (I still remember Rodriguez in an interview stating that at the time of its release). It was kindof a reboot/sequel, like they did with Superman Returns.

Besides, in EM El's hand was completely disfigured after it was shot at the end (remembering the metal hand he had when riding off on the bike in the final shot), but in Desperado his hand just had a scar. That alone is a significant plot change.

Dude, the guy that shot El in the flashback scene WASN'T Bucho. That was the same main bad guy from El Mariachi (can't remember his name, but he kept lighting his match on the one dude's face), and the one who started clapping out loud when El and his pals were playing in the bar dream scene at the beginning of Desperado. Just wanted to correct you there :-) Maybe you should go rewatch it?

No. Bucho (played by Joaquim de Almeida) is the main bad guy, and brother of El Mariachi in Desperado. Mauricio, AKA Moco (played by Peter Marquardt) is the main bad guy in El Mariachi (whom we also see in the beginning flashback in Desperado), who shoots El's hand.

johnny depp was a mistake in this film, he was so good he made the rest of the film seem even more boring and crappy

It's hard not to agree with THAT statement! Antonio Banderas was eye candy and little more. Salma Hayek was hot even to a straight chick like me, but Johnny Depp just stole the entire film, and I'm not even among the new crop of Jack Sparrow-inspired Depp-heads. (I got addicted from the earliest days of "21 Jump Street" but lost interest circa "Nick of Time" and "Donnie Brasco". Rekindled circa "Blow", then on and off ever since.) "Once Upon a Time..." was actually a fave that I watched several times on my own, but a few nights ago I coerced a friend into viewing it with me and I was SOOOO embarrassed by the ridiculousness of the stunts, the crappy, sub-standard plot, everything really, bar Depp's performance. Now pardon me while I adjust my rating.

Gotta agree too, the film would have been embaressingly forgettable, great soundtrack to it though, except for Depps invention of Agent Sands, who happens to be my favourite film character, ever. Depp manages to do this kinda thing, do something truly remarkable, and as Sands, genius, IMHO , in an otherwise mundane film a lot.
OUATIM is entertaining enough for what it is,explosions and plot holes you could drive a bus through, but no one is meant to think much while watching it and then we get Sands and it just goes to a different level.
That makes OUATIM my guilty pleasure, cos Sands is just twistedly fantastic, I watch it, sometimes to just try and workout how he is doing it, making that character work, it shouldnt, he's the 'bad' in the good bad and ugly, scenario, RR had going on, but its just so totally Depps film, I still love it.

a fun movie

I dig this movie. Was surprised to see the low score. And yes, it is better than Desperado.

Bucho was in charge of the men in El Mariachi but wasnt in the movie. In Desperado, El finds out who was responsible and goes after him. By the way, why are we calling in El. El just means "the" in spanish. not a very clever name nor is it frightning. Watch out....the the is coming.

Here's my take on the "Mariachi" Trilogy-

El Mariachi... A solid movie. Fun, with some good suspense. It has a fairly stright-forward plot, but works well.

Desperado... Deffinitly the most "fun" movie of the three. A story that's a bit sillier (the ending revalation was a bit "eh, so what? No big deal." for me, and was just kind of there to be a twist.), but more action and much more solid direction.

Once Upon A Time In Mexico... In my opinion, it has the most interesting (and convuluted) plot out of all three, and works as both a sequel and a stand-alone film. Bigger action as well. Overall, very entertaining. It is my personal favorite, though I know people who don't like it because Salma Hayek was killed off.

I personally like this one the most, followed closely by both of the others in a tie for second place.
