Series 1 review (spoilers)

Started a rewatch and just finished series 1 which is probably my favourite.

One thing I love about the first season is it's a very personal one. As the series got bigger understandably so did the threats, but it often became about general terrorists. Series 1 works so well because it is basically about revenge, with the people having a grudge and vendetta against Jack and Palmer. It is a lot of a more smaller and personal story yet it still feels large scale, like you don't know who to trust, who's involved etc.

I never thought about it until I read a review, but this really is the only series where we see some of Jack's normal married life at the start. I didn't mind some of the stuff with Kim and Terri either although they kept reusing the kidnapping angle which gets a bit tired at the end but also makes sense as it shows they are never safe.

I enjoy David Palmer and seeing his relationship develop with Jack. Sherri is also a great character, if one we love to hate, as we never know fully how far she will go.

The whole mole thing became a running joke as the show kept using it but this was the first season and the shock at the end was originally great.

However I'm unsure how Nina's shock works rewatching (have rewatched a couple of times in the past). I know a lot aren't keen that Gaines tried to kill her but he wouldn't have known who she was so I have no problem with this. I presume she killed Jamey in case she had seen something but then if she had wouldn't she have told Gaines?

The main issue is the fact in the hospital she sees the FBI agent and later realises that they weren't FBI and we see her worry for Kim and Terri and move them to the safe house. This to me doesn't fit the fact she then later sets Jack up with the Drazen's. No one else was with her and realised about the FBI agent so she seemed actually concerned which is a bit weird. I know the actress didn't know she was a mole till near the end but you'd have thought the writers wouldn't have had her do something like this?

The only conclusion I have is she isn't supposed to do anything to ruin her cover which makes sense but then why would she take the risk of later giving the Drazen's information and putting herself at risk. It seemed very risky.

It just seems odd because she often helps Jack even when it is not in her best interests as a mole.

But great series
