Why the hell they are singing?

I saw and hated it. Terrible songs from terrible voices in terrible french. Bah!

reply

And a terrible post by a terrible viewer -oh mon amour mon ami...

reply

i agree. hehehe.

reply

Too much buetyfull Emanuelle Béart can't fich' the move!!!!!!

reply

Agreed.

reply

Don't you think their terrible singing themselves are fun? So as their terrible dancing. That's what Ozon wanted - a satire to Musical. And He succeeded.

reply

Because it's a musical. Next.

reply

"Look, I don't understand. In musicals...
why do they start to sing and dance all of a sudden?
I mean, I don't suddenly start... to sing and dance.

No...
You're right, Jeff. You don't."

reply

I think you've got to be French to fully appreciate the connection songs/movie

reply

don't agree...I'm not French, and I fully appreciated the movie, the songs, the dance routines, the silliness and everything. The movie just made me cry and laugh. IT reminds me a little bit like Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You just in that silly musicial sense that is making fun of its own genre. to the person who said they thought the singing was horrible...I disagree, I think the music and voices was wonderful and listen to the soundtrack reguarly...but then again I'm a dork...

"Life is divided into the horrible and the miserable." -Woody Allen

reply

Oh no,you're not!

reply

Ahhh!!

I can't believe this... the movie is great, so are the songs, especially

Toi Jamais
Papa t'es plus dans l'coup
Mon amour, mon ami
Pile ou face..

I don't understand why a lot of people doesn't understand the musicals.. the songs are a way to express something, not a common plot...

reply

Bah. Humbug! :D

reply

I agree with you! I'm an American and I just finished 8 Femmes. I thought it was a wonderful movie. I wasn't bored once, and I thought it was quite charming and sad.

I had no idea it was a musical when I started watching. I had only seen one French musical prior to viewing this one, and that was Not On The Lips with Audrey Tautou. It's weird to watch a musical in a different language, but I got that this musical wasn't your average one. I saw the humor in it during the first break out in song and dance.

I loved all of the characters, especially when all of the eccentricities came out near the end of the film.

Good film.

i can see wat u mean although i don't think it is entirely true 2 say u can't appreciate if u aren't french. i'm not french although i speak/understand the language and i noticed that a lot was lost through the translation from french to english, however i don't think this would stop someone from appreciating the film. Anyone can do that if they approach it with the right kind of attitude. I thought 8 women was charming and entertaining throughout as with most french films (unlike sum american crap that keeps being churned out 2 "entertain" the masses *cough[starsky and hutch]cough*) As 4 the person who doesn't understand why people burst in 2 song spontaneously in musicals; this is a generic convention which you accept in order 2 enjoy and understand the movie/show. I don't see aliens or space ships but that doesn't mean i can't enjoy a sci-fi movie.

reply

I too must admit that the singing was a tad bit odd. i did like the song the made sang but the one where the two sisters were doing that little dance thing. But i did enjoy this movie ALOT! i'm not big on musicalls so... PLEASE DONT WITCH-HUNT MY ARSE!

Yes, french cinema is really often better than others in the world! No need to do a Blockbuster like Gozilla or Batman 4 to make a good movie! And no need to see Aliens too! here It's touching, sometimes spiritual and suddenly stupid or funny! that's it: you like it or you hate it but it does't leave people indifferent. Romantism and spirit is getting rare nowdays ! And i don't speak about those silly comedies like "Along came Polly, American pie, My best friend's Wedding or the sweetest thing"

I don't want to make you change your mind ! for some of you, you are from US i guess and you've just discovered that there is not only Hollywood in the World! Overseas there is another world in sport, cinema, habits and talent! And not only in France, but Spain, Germany, Italia or Netherlands! Just open your mind to the world and accept that there can be difference ! Now i acknoledge i'm keen on US cinema, i like Nic Cage, Hugh Jackman, Jim Caviezel, Charlize Theron or Linda Hamilton and my favorites films are T2 and Face Off! I don't like french cinema that much .... but that's it!

Why do you think we see actors like Bruce Willis, Johnny Depp, Jodie Foster, Brad Pitt and i forget some ... play in french movies ???!
And french directors are great too : Besson (5th element), Annaud(7 year in Tibet), Jeunet(Alien4, Amelie), Polansky(*), Goddart, Lelouch, Pialat, Poiré, Zidi, Kalpish, Truffaut, Tavernier, Techiné, Chabrol ... and so much more.

just BE OPEN MINDED

reply

I would not say French movies are better there not, the story maybe. All the French directors you mentioned are wonderful, with the expection of one, but hey I will keep my opinions too myself on that one. True I'm a huge fan of Deneuve and Huppert, and Beart. Hollywood is not the only place that has good movies. Sweden and the Netherlands are becoming a set place for foregin films. Moodyson a wonderful director from Sweden. Garbo, Dietriech, Bergman, and the list goes on were from Sweden and Germany, they came too Hollywood. Hollywood is one big melting pot.

You must know the meaning of the lyrics otherwise you wouldn't understand why they are singing. Each character has their own song and the meaning of that is according with what we know about her at that point that she is singing. Catherine is the first to sing, with only ten minutes, the meaning of her song is just about a teenager. When Augustine (I. Huppert) or Pierrette (F. Ardant) sung we had a pretty idea about their characters. Very touching are the lyrics in the one sung by Madame Channel (Firmine Richard)when we learned that she is a lesbian. The best one is "There's no happy Love" sung by Danielle Darrieux which is a poem written by Levis Aragon.

reply

I agree Doc, and the only one I didn't like was Beart's song, but it did fit her character.

You should watch "gouttes d'eau sur pierres brullantes" also by Ozon. In that film too there are some scenes where the actors start dancing. I think it's really hilarious !! It's kind of an Ozon-trademark I think.

Ludivine Sagnier also stars in that film, she , in fact, is one of Ozon's favourite actresses... and i share his opinion :)

Great movie !! Love Ozon !!

reply

Personally i hated this movie. And agree about the songs, i think they´re just ridiculous. Some of you say that´s the point; you may be right but it just didn´t do it for me. I do like musicals, someone else mentioned everyone says I love you; i love that film. But in this movie i found the songs quite unfitting. And no, I´m not american and I like european movies.

reply

I liked this movie. I also didn't mind the singing either, and the dancing wasn't that bad. I especially liked the end scene and the song was so haunting and beautiful at the same time. Does anyone know what the name of the song is (the very last one)? And if so, does anyone know where I can get the music for it?

reply

All I've got to say is that I loved the song that Firmine Richard sang. It almost made me cry, as for the rest of it, I would never have been able to understand it without subtitles, and I've been taking french for over ten years. Especially when Isabelle Huppert was talking.. Man what a mouth!

Also, the lesbian was TOO MUCH! ROFLMAO!

reply

glckl, if your referring too the very last song with Mamy singing, it's called, ll n'y a pas d' amor heureux, or the English version There Is No Happy Love. Well I think it's close, my French is alttle bit rusty. The soundstrack is avaiable at Amazon.com or try Ebay, that's where I got mine.
Hope this helps.

I like French songs very much. It is great there is this movie with Catherine Deneuve et al, and they sing!!!

I never understand why people go to something they are probably not going to like and then feel compelled to write about it being awful. If they are singing, its a musical. They are speaking French because its a French movie. Two things that you seem to not like. So why waste your negative energy putting down such a fun film? go watch Transformers or something along else you are more likely to enjoy and review that :)

reply

Agreed. But then they're going to pull that whole "Freedom of Speech" card so unfortunately we have to deal with that unnecessary crap. I personally liked this movie a lot. Did a little presentation in French class back in high school with my friend and we performed that little dance Suzon did with her sister in the bedroom. We didn't sing of course; we had the movie playing at the same time but it was fun.

Ludivine Sagnier's line "That is the question" always makes me giggle when I watch it. Her accent is so cute.

reply

I find it really bizarre but in a good way. It definitely had a comical aspect to it, whether they intended it or not.

reply

I like the songs and the dance numbers. They are memorable, tuneful, lively, and never boring. I like the lyrics. They are basically a variation of monologues, which is suitable since the film is based on a play. I was interested in what the characters hac to say and reveal about themselves. I was always pleasantly surprised every time a song is performed suddenly without warning. In this manner, the film creates its own offbeat humor, universe, and rules.
