Importance fans, any other good movies?

I really liked this movie, it wasn't advertised enough and I just happened to see it on a Target t.v. thingy and rented it. Of course I bought it and borrowed it out to everyone insisting that they watch it. This movie is really great. With that said I was wondering, does anyone have a movie that they like that is somewhat similair in charactor to this one that they would recommend?

In terms of humerous period pieces, there are two other movies that I really adore. An Ideal Husband should of course be a given, but additionally I'm really fond of St. Ives (Jean-Marc Barr, Anna Friel, Miranda Richardson, and Richard E. Grant), which is a really cute movie IMO.

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported

I second the suggestion for An Ideal Husband! Rupert is perfect for Wilde roles. Plus the rest of the cast is perfect, especially Julianne Moore.

Ideal Husband, Emma, and Pride and Prejudice. All very well done.

An Ideal Husband is fab, but I also really liked My Best Friend's Wedding, which is not really the same type of film, but it is great and Rupert Everett is brilliant in it (he actually sings!).

Definitely see the A&E miniseries of Pride and Prejudice. Colin Firth is the perfect Mr. Darcy. You'll love all 5 1/2 hours of it!

Try Kind Hearts and Coronets and the original [better] version of this film with Michael Redgrave et al.

reply

I agree totally. Alec Guiness in Kind Hearts/Coronets is fabulously funny as is Redgrave and the others in Importance/Ernest.

See the 1952 version starring Sir Michael Redgrave and Dame Edith Evans. It also stars many greats of the British theater/cinema such as Joan Greenwood, Dorothy Tutin, and Dame Margaret Rutherford. It's far superior to this remake.

Perhaps you might enjoy Gosford Park.

I have noticed some people have suggested Pride and Prejudice. Well that is a fantastic suggestion if you want more Colin Firth. If you want more Ruperett Everet tI also suggest My best friends wedding. They are both fantastic movies.
(See Pride and Prejudice first though)

I agree with all these suggestions, especially Emma and Nicholas Nickelby. I would also recommend Valmont and, just for something a little different, The Princess Bride.

If you are still reading this thread and haven't yet seen 'A Good Woman' 2004 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379306/) do try to get to a showing or watch out for the DVD.

In my opinion it's a much better adaptation (play to film that is) - set in the 1930's (great frocks) on the Amalfi coast (great locations) in Italy - it's just sumptious. Ok the leads are now American but Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johansson do a good job and Tom Wilkinson is even better than here.

Films which are based on Henry James's as well as E.M.Forster's novels are a great choice for the fanatics of that era. James Ivory is a director who has dealt a lot with these novelists' works. He has directed "A room with a view", based on E.M.Forster's novel with Helena Bonham-Carter, Maggie Smith and other talented British actors. You might also want to watch "Maurice" by the same director and the same author with Hugh Grant. Another good suggestion is "Howard's End" written by E.M.Forster and directed by James Ivory starring the enchanting Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham-Carter and others, as well as "The golden bowl" based on the book hy Henry James with Nick Nolte and Uma Thurmann. Also watch "The Europeans" and "The Bostonians" with Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Reeve and others by the same director and author.
If you have already watched films that are based on Jane Austen's works such as the BBC mini series "Pride and Prejudice" and the film "Emma" and you enjoyed them, then it's time you also watched Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" directed by Ang Lee with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and other British actors, as well as the BBC film "Persuasion" based on the novel by Jane Austen with Amanda Root and Kieran Hinds. Finally, some years ago an adaptation of Jane Austen's "Manfield Park" was released starring Frances O' Connell.
I hope that my suggestions will be useful to you all who have enjoyed "The Importance of being Earnest".
