'The Master Cylinder!'

As a kid I was struck by how unusual this name was...what the hell kind of name is that? A master of cylinders? Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Well, years later I learned that this is a part of a car's brake system! This is the "pump" that connects the brake pedal to the rest of the hydraulic system...it operates the wheel (slave) cylinders...hence "Master"!

As Inspector Clouseau would say "The case solve-ed!"

As a fan of the movie, there is a scarier version of the Master Cylinder created by the movie's villian the Duke of Zill, but Felix managed to destroy it by throwing this magic book at it.

reply

He only lasted like 5 seconds!

reply

5 seconds? He'd never make it in porno's then!

If an X rated version of Felix were ever made the villain could be an evil self abusing fisherman named the "Master Baiter"! Sorry 'bout that, I'll shut up now.

reply

Lol, whosit.

I never found out where that name came from either-until I needed the brakes fixed on my car.

Another note: I've heard beer drinkers refer to 24 oz cans as Master Cylinders.

Mention of Snidely Whiplash reminded me on another cartoon villain: Simon Bar Sinister. Yet another odd name which led me to googlizing it (googlating?). Turns out that it's a corruption of "Barre Sinister" and roughly translates to "The Bastard" Dubiously interesting side point is that it's also a heraldic mark depicting a diagonal slash from the upper right hand corner to the lower left similar to the way some write zero.

As many actors say, playing bad guys is the most fun and it seems that voice over artists have a blast with these over the top characters.

Funny you should mention Simon-I was just thinking about that character. I'd love to watch Underdog again. You know, I thought his name was spelled this way: "Simon-Sinister", but you just pronounced the "bar."

That reverberating, metallic voice, those cruel video eyes, those clanking pincers he had for hands, that evil mind encased in that towering chamber, very mobile without any noticable means of propulsion.

This was the nefarious Master Cylinder, ruler of Mars, would-be conqueror of the Planet Earth.

Terrific villain, mysterious, unpredictable, and the perfect primer for children for evil-doers.

Right down there with Snidely Whiplash! Boo! Hiss!.

APparently those and the abovementioned Simon Bar Sinister have Barrymore connectionns...Master Cylinder (allegedly) and Simon Bar Sinister (truly) to Lionel Barrymore, Snidely Whiplash and many of Hans Conreid's other hammy characters (Capt.Hook, for example), on John Barrymore.

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

Yes. Simon Bar Sinister is most definitely a riff on Barrymore's character, Henry F. Potter from It's a Wonderful life (1946).

They have the same voice inflections.

Thanks for posting, gcarras

General Clang, and their good counterpart Martin (NOT MARVIN, or the Ray Walston character who'd debut after FtC ended), as well. (Clang was the evil squid., Martin, like Felix, had an unusual gimmick, this case the magic 4D space capsure)
