Back when the Disney Channel was good...

This was one of my favorite shows on the Disney Channel when I was a kid!!! Along with "Adventures in Wonderland" (that's what it was called, right?), "Dumbo's Circus", "Gummi Bears", "Avonlea"...what else? Oh yeah, "Care Bears", "My Little Pony Tales". This was when the Disney Channel was a family channel (meaning that everyone could watch it), not just a "tween" channel. I also like the Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other old cartoons they used to show. Like the one with Mickey, Goofy, and Donald and the trailer. Anyone know which one I mean???

I completely agree! TV has changed so much, especially the Disney Channel.. i remember they used to show Zorro and Vault Disney for adults, cartoons for toddlers, and shows for older kids like "Kids Incorporated" (my personal favorite) and "MMC".. now its mainly for like you said, the 'tweens' its kind of sad really. I even wrote Disney Channel a letter about this about a month ago, well see if they respond..

reply

dont forget the fraggles.Yo, seriously i wish i could be a kid again.Just to watch disney channel....when it was good.

reply

I agree completely. Disney Channel has gone into the dumper. Welcome to Pooh Corner, Dumbo's Circus, Danger Bay, The Edison Twins, Good Morning Mickey, Donald Duck Presents, and Mousterpiece Theater are just a few I remember enjoying when I was growing up. They used to show the original Mickey Mouse Club and older Disney movies (Tommy Kirk/Annette Funicello type) and other genuine Disney stuff. The only person I know who appreciates the programming they currently show is my 10 year old niece. Perhaps Disney should consider a "Disney Classic" channel for all of us who do not enjoy Lizzy Maguire and other such shows.

reply

And they reguarly showed other stuff too aside from just Disney. Remember when they regularly aired the 40's Superman cartoons as a series, or the Charlie Brown and Snoopy show? And back in the day they even showed Hitchcock movies!

And another thing: The reason Disney Channel was so great in the 80's and early 90's was that it focused on all age groups: kids, adults, teens, and all the rest of the age groups. Nowadays it only focuses on two specific age groups: preschoolers and preteens; essentially saying ***k everyone else

I remember wanting to write a letter to Disney once because I was so perturbed that they took Pooh Corner off the air. I even made a rough draft for that letter, but it never saw completion, unfortunately. It was like they stole a part of my childhood...that's really how I felt! And they don't have any DVD's, they don't have any reruns, and the kids nowadays sure as heck don't have any clue about this show whatsoever, I can guarantee you.

And what's even worse is the Disney channel nowadays isn't even a quarter as good as it was in the early 90's. Disney today is too cheesy, doesn't appeal to as wide an audience as it once did, doesn't have a lot of variety in its programming offerings, and doesn't offer any classic shows.

What once was a unique, wholesome family channel has now become a repetitive, unoriginal, wasteland. I don't watch as much TV as I did when I was a kid, and for good reason. TV just isn't what it used to be, as you and I both know.

If I had to make an educated guess as to why, I would probably suspect that the writing on the networks is not as superior as it used to be way back when in the late 80s to mid 90s era. The creative flair is just not a part of the Nickolodeon and Disney landscape anymore.

What I would really like to see is a classics Disney Channel. Since it started April of 1983, I think they should launch a new channel exactly 25 years later, and call it "Vault Disney Channel" or something like that, and just replay the entire playlist exactly as it was 25 years earlier. I think it would be a relatively cheap operation as they would just have to dust off items from their archives and show them again, they would rarely, if ever have to generate new content for the channel. I would pay quite a bit of money to have this channel.

Great Idea!!!

I wish this was on you tube, in better quality. I don't really remember some of the episodes you guys are mentioning. My grandma gave me a video cassette tape from one of my cousins that had some Welcome to Pooh Corner episodes on it. Does anyone remember an episode where they go to the beach or something? I LOVED that episode!
So I also think that's a great idea. I didn't have the Disney Channel back then (hence the video tape), but if Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales would be on it, them I'm all for it!

Now there's a plan! I totally agree with you. I used to LOVE the Disney Channel
back in the early '90s. I feel that 1997 was when this channel really went to
sh*t, by adding commercials and all those silly tween shows.

reply

I remember every single show you mentioned. I grew up with all of them! Do you remember "Under the Umbrella Tree"? That was my number #1 ALL-TIME FAVORITE! It ran on the Disney Channel from the 80's to 1995 or '96. Also Shelly Duvall's "Faerie Tale Theatre" would be aired on the Disney Channel to my eager anticipation along with another favorite "Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories". The Disney Channel ROCKED back then! Unfortunately, some idiots have gotten control of the station's programming and wrecked what used to be a gem of television.

man I remeber all that stuff and the purple people eater and the prequell to a christmas story haily oppnoodles (or however its spelled) how about "you and me kid" or mousercise lol let the old times roll

Oh, God, yes...I remember all those shows! My brother and I loved Welcome to Pooh Corner, Dumbo's Circus, My Little Pony Tales (yes, even my brother), Gummi Bears, Care Bears, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, DarkWing Duck, TaleSpin, Jungle Cubs. All that good stuff. Darnit...I feel your pain! I want the old Disney Channel back! My mom, my brother, and I used to watch it all the time back when it was a family channel.
Oh, and lavender2005, I loooove Shellie Duvall's Fairy Tale Theatre very much! My library has almost all of the VHS tapes of it! It carries a lot of old stuff. *sigh* If only...

And this Book of Pooh is such a copycat, too. I mean, sure it's okay. But it doesn't compare to Book of Pooh. I watched that everyday! ^_^

Check the gate, watch yourself, check the gate, show me watcha got! And check...

reply

Welcome to Pooh Corner and Dumbo's Circus were a few of my all-time favorites!

Yeah, those were great old days! Disney would have a huge success if they simply started re-airing all of these wonderful old shows for the young generation who need to watch some quality and for the people like us who are nostalgic. That would be amazing!

reply

I thought for the shows that Disney Channel has on now could be moved to something called a "Teen Disney Channel." Then, The Disney Channel can be The Disney Channel again with the channel being built around Disney Characters. Now all these shows they have aren't even Disney except 7 shows.

reply

Oh, the old Disney Channel....back when I believe you had to pay to specifically get that channel. Now of course it comes with cable.

I love the old Disney channel so much, im gonna make a list of the shows/movies they used to play on the Disney channel. And I apologize if any have already been mentioned in this thread.

Remember............

* "Escape to Witch Mountain" ? No, I'm not talking about the old one, but the made for disney tv updated version starring Elisabeth Moss and a young Erik von Detten.

* "Disney's Halloween Treat" ? Back when Disney was awesome and used to show that halloween special with the creepy/halloweeny clips from Disney movies (like the witch from Snow White).

* the Jiminy Cricket educational cartoons? Jiminy would teach kids how to be safe in different situations, like being safe at the beach, etc. Can't for the life of me remember what they were titled. But remember his little song? "Im no fool, nosiree!!! I'm gonna live to be 103, I play safe for you and me, cause I'm noooo fool!!"

* "A Child's Christmas in Wales"? Your parent's might perhaps remember this more than you do, but IMDB it if you don't.

* "Ollie Hopnoodles Haven of Bliss"? From the same guy who brought us "A Christmas Story", but sadly many people have forgotten the bliss of "Haven of Bliss".

* "Dinosaurs"? Now, I could very well be wrong about this, but I thought the Disney channel aired Dinosaurs (ya know..NOT THE MAMA!! **frying pan whack**).

* "The New Mickey Mouse Club"? starring Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and whole lot of others.

* back when they used to show TV specials about Disneyworld and Disneyland? I believe there was one special where they gave a special 'behind the scenes' look about how they put together their fireworks shows and how they made sure everything was correctly timed.

* "Danger Bay"? And remember that otter they had?

* the "Parent Trap" sequels? The ones where Hayley Mills was all grown up and had a kid of her own.

* "the Baby-Sitters Club"? Yes, there was a show!

* "Darkwing Duck"?

* "Eerie, Indiana"? Which had the same kid who later played the older brother in "Hocus Pocus".

* "Flash Forward"? about a girl and boy who have lived next door next to each other since pretty much forever, and their lives at school, etc.

* "Goof Troop"? Which later spawned "A Goofy Movie" which is one of the coolest movies ever!

annnnnnndddd theres a ton more.. but I think I'll leave it at that for now.

Oh yeah, I remember all those shows. The behind the scenes Disney World shows I remember were, "Walt Disney World: Inside Out and "Inside Disney".

reply

I wish Disney would just go back to their old format. What's up with all these bad shows? Or at the very least re-run the older stuff.

reply

I'm going to be working at Disney, and I sure don't like the new crap, either, I plan to bring it back to being actual Disney.

reply

I sure hope you do! I loved the Disney Channel---until about 1998. After 2000, it lost all it's classic line-up and programing blocks! The behind-the-scenes specials were pretty darn good too!

I am the movies I love! (^_^)

reply

Disney Junior the Channel is now airing the classic stuff, so this may be one of them someday. I kiss its feet!

reply

I agree. This is back when Disney was Just perfect

I love you, Kristen Stewart. :) You are so beautiful and talented. I would love to perform with you.

reply

I completely agree with you. I miss when the Disney Channel was a premiere channel that you had to pay for. Disney Channel was fantastic and now it went completely downhill....
