i can understand theyre trying to establish will's character, as a loner, whos got enough fortune to live off for ages, but to not have a single friend is just beyond me, i bet he had a million facebook friends. lol

Clearly he had friends if someone asked him to be the godfather of their child. He has no one to hang out with during the day since everybody else has a job.

It's shown pretty consistently that he has other friends, it's just that most are as shallow as he is.
When the story begins, Will knows a lot of people but drops them whenever they become too much. His flashbacks and other activities show that he can have a life full of people -- he just chooses not to.
