Great film although Americans will not understand it.

I thought 'Its All About Love' was a great film but it was an exercise in putting a wolf in sheeps clothing. The film really is all about love and made with a great love of the traditions of cinema both American and European. It reminded me of films like Alphaville.

Its not really set in the future. Its just a polemic about the fact there isn't enough love in this world. What happens in the world outside ones doorstep is the result of this. I can't really argue with it, I just hope Americans can work out the message. I think however they will react badly with this film. They are too used to being drip fed their movie plots from Hollywood, and too used to having their egos massaged into being told that their illegal war with Iraq is actually a hard but right decision to make. It's not.

I think Vinterberg must be a Marxist, as he points out that it is better to dye freezing in the lost wastes, than take part of a society that uses you until you are left dying in the streets.

Give me a Vinterberg film everyday of the week. Its worth ten Hollywood films.

i'm no american etc..
and no popcorn cinema lover..
i watch all genre of films from pure experimental, short to mainstream..

but this one was a disappointment.

poor direction, poor screenplay, although it's got a great cast, the actors were shockingly not that so great as you'd expect them to be.. accents sounded odd and inconsistent (sean penn in particular)..
scoring was weak.. didnt contribute to the mood and moments of the film..
i didnt feel the love and regrets betw the 2 main characters which i think was crucial for the story.. to portray 'love' theme..
people dying on the street because of cosmic change in the universe etc.. NOW that's definitely an interesting idea i'd love to see evolve, elaborated on.. but it didnt feel real or any coherent at all..
i've seen some real odd films with unique ideas of the world, universe and human race.. and those ones blew my mind away.. not this one.

this film had good intention, to pass a message! which is 'love is lacking in this world.. etc..'
but it fails to do so..
courageous attempt though.

Hi I am not American, but I did not understand what that film was about. I thought it was bollocks

So what?

I'm really sorry to open the wound again, but I just can't sit back on that one comment from before.
Some American stated something about this being 1933 all over again, and the US and the UK are just the only ones that are not to afraid to do something about it.
You compared the muslim world with Hitler. That is just wrong dude.

YOU are the one sounding like Hitler when you speak of an entire culture in the way that you do. After I read your post, it made me realise how much you sound like a fascist. It seriously sounds like you wouldn't mind if somebody just gassed the entire middle-eastern population (except for the american embassies and corporations of course) and made huge graves for them to lie in afterwards.

It the attitude that you cary around that made the those Al Queda guys do 9-11.
I'm not saying it's your fault completely, it was their choice, but you, your attitude, and the people that agrees with you, you are also to blaime, you have treated the third world like a big boardgame over the last century. You are all
responsible for terrorist attacks.

Okay, then what did the Hindus and Buddhists (pacifists) do to make the Islamo-Fascists genocidally slaughter them you idiot? I can't believe that there are still people in this world as blindly retarded as you are. These guys would kill YOU if they had the chance, you fool! They kidnap and behead the aid workers and protesters that are there to help them! They kill their own people! Who do you think the majority of the victims of the Islamo-Fascist killing spree are? Other Muslims, you idiot! They kill Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus- anyone who refuses to live under their opression! Please, I beg you, find one major conflict on this planet which does not involve radical Islamists not getting along with their neighbors, and maybe you have a leg to stand on here. Use your head before you lose your head, you dunce.

The reason that Americans are seen as dumb is simply because regardless of how diverse your people may be racially or intellectually, your movie industry in Hollywood is simply a *beep* money making machine that really doesn't care about the artistic nature of movies. They just want to make money. And the american people in general follow Hollywood's BS and even measure a movie's greatness in how much money it makes. Sure, not all americans are like this, just like not all of Hollywood's movies are crap, but the majority are.

riiggght.
and i suppose no other big international film industries [like bollywood] have their own pieces of worthless rubbish they call film?

americans are fat and have no culture/taste, while the rest of the world is full of red wine and cheese eating, art film watching cultured people?

go crawl back in your cave.

"riiggght.

I'm sure they must but international cinema is nowhere near as commercialized and dumbed-down as Hollywood is.

"americans are fat and have no culture/taste, while the rest of the world is full of red wine and cheese eating, art film watching cultured people?"

Only a moron could say something like this. About anyone.

"go crawl back in your cave."

I thought we agreed this kind of talk was for idiots.

Oh but Bollywood IS MORE commercial than American cinema but it doesn't make a fetish of guns and killing in QUITE the same way.

American cinema is just dire, at the moment, don't you think?

I enjoyed INLAND EMPIRE - all about how hollywood recycles peoples dreams into meaningless dirge of images. (Co made in Poland by the way)

Sure there are more bad films in the world than good.

Do you think I am American bashing? I'm not. I'm just saying that a country that has so many high school shootings - has a real problem that it can't see even if it is staring it in the face.

Maybe you should think about LOVE. Your high school system seems to breed outsiders that are rejected from inner sanctum of your WHITE ANGLO SAXON CORPORATE rule and you are surprised that with no gun controls stuff like that happens.

By the way, I am completely serious!

See - straight face.

A female president would be nice. Don't you think?

Let me start saying I have not read all the posts, just in case.

I don't think americans are stupid at all; you don't get where they are being stupid. They are smart and hard working people. But I also understand the baseline of this post, since it's commonly felt outside USA (I am colombian) that USA culture is superficial, filled with common places and molded to look alike always.

This happens, I think, because north american media, entertainment industry, publicity and, in general, massive diffusion media, has created a model of art and culture based on icons like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Adam Sandler, Steven Seagal, etc... I greatly appreciate many north american art expressions, but wherever you look around you find yourself flooded with this superficial form of entertainment, that ends up being the general idea formed in people's minds about north americans.

USA mainstream cinema is completely different from most movies made abroad, even from independent USA movies. And I also agree on the fact that most U.S. viewers are too used to that mainstream model of movie, so often they don't like foreign ones because they don't understand them or, more likely, are not used to enjoy such type of film. But I'm pretty sure that most north americas that have the chance to live abroad for a while, learn to see a different type of cinema and enjoy it as well... So they are not stupid at all.

Fair enough.

By the way 75% of Americans don't own a passport - that means over 200 million people have no desire to leave their country, even for a holiday.

Oh by the way could you pass the cheese and that Bordeaux I've been saving

americans, like most people, probably won't like this film because it's boring. nothing profound happens, nothing interesting happens, no great acting occurs, no interesting music is played, etc. the cinematography is beautiful, but that's all the movie has going for it.

OP needs to give up watching movies and read essays. great filmmakers can make statements in *good* films.

Hollywood films suck, the Iraq war sucks, people who assume all Americans only like stupid Hollywood drivel suck and mostly this film sucks

"AND AMERICA NOT WATCHING THE OSCARS BECAUSE THEY AREN"T HANDED OUT TO AMERICANS SUCKS!"

Yeah, that's why Americans didn't watch the oscars. So many pretentious people on this thread. Give me a break. It's All About Love wasn't that interesting or even that artistic for that matter. Americans are far more diverse than some of you realize. I'm sure it's real easy to lump us all together into a homogenous blob of war mongers and idiots. But its even easier for us to lump you into a blob of pretention and snobbery. Basically, the name of this thread says it all.(Pretentious!) A lot of Americans helped make this stupid film by the way, unfortunately they wasted their talents on this peice of rubbish.

"Now go home and get your *beepin* shinebox."

My friend I think you are being too narrow minded. It's not just Americans that think like that. When I traveled through England and Italy I met a number of young Brits and Italians that had the same opinion of cinema that you are describing in this thread. I think it has more to do with a maturity level and age group than with a particular culture.
