I asked Daniel Kitson about this when he was doing standup and he gave two reasons why he called Peter Kay "a parochial c__t".
He said he had a conversation with Kay in which Kay stated that he hated doing standup and hated the audience, he just did it to pay the bills.
Kitson also said that he considered Series 2, with the Chinese migrants, overtly racist and celebratory of the fact.

reply

"Kitson also said that he considered Series 2, with the Chinese migrants, overtly racist and celebratory of the fact."

And yet he was more than happy to cash the cheques after filming. Its so easy to be a stand up guy after the fact. Kitson is a dog turd of the highest order.

So yeah......

reply

And he was in That Thing with Peter Kay! He has done nothing since Phoenix according to IMDB! He shud be grateful to Peter Kay!

Does Peter Kay really not like doing stand up? He seems to enjoy it and lets face it, he doesn't really need to do it with his TV programs doing so well

this face, the infection which poisons our love

reply

I'm sure he must enjoy it really. And even if he doesn't, he's damn good at it! The money he makes is very well deserved

So why isn't The Office called Ricky Gervais's The Office?

reply

Because it wasn't purely Ricky's creation. It was an idea him and Stephen Merchant came up with, while Phoenix Nights was Peter Kay's creation. He had the idea, and of course it came from That Peter Kay Thing, which his name is also in the title from.

reply

But if it wasn't for Spikey and Fitzmaurice Phoenix Night's wouldn't be half the show it was.

reply

True, but they didn't come up with it, just helped write it.

reply

Kitson should be grateful to Kay, I agree. Kay mentions on one of the DVD commentaries how he saw Kitson doing a show in Birmingham and then offered him the role here. He then turned around and announced that Phoenix Nights was lazy and racist. Ask yourself: would Channel 4 really put on a racist and offensive high-profile comedy show at 9.30pm or whatever?

It's not just Daniel kitson who doesn't like peter kay anymore. dave spikey hates him now to, cause he took all the credit for phoenix nights and insisted on collecting an award on his own. i used to be i big peter kay fan, but it would appear he has sold out and become a diva.

You'd get more respect if you said 'The Perrier Awards'...

"It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage... "

reply

Totally agree with you, I saw Daniel Kitson at a comedy club when I was at uni, and he was absolutely hillarious. The audience enjoyed it so much, his slot ran on for so much longer than it was supposed to, but no-one cared as they were having such a good time.

reply

The people who vote for the Chortle awards are very strange people. Once someone has made it big, they turn their back on them. I have seen this happen again and again. Examples include Lenny Henry and Rowan Atkinson. More recently the same has happened with such incredible talent as Dara O' Briain and Sean Lock.

Peter Kay won the 'So you think you're funny title' which apart from the Perriers is about as big as it comes (much bigger than the Chortle awards). How can he all of a sudden be not funny anymore?

I have seen Daniel Kitson perform story shows and straight stand up on about 10 occasions. The guy is hilarious, but if I had to bet my life on somebody making me laugh- it would be Kay.

reply

It should be called Reeves and Mortimer's Phoenix Nights if we're going with putting the creators in the title...

reply

Daniel Kitson may yet have the last laugh. Daniel Kitson has recently earned himself a reputation as the funniest stand-up comic working today. I have read many reviews from stand-up festivals and they all pretty much agree Daniel Kitson is the next big thing in stand-up comedy.

reply

Daniel Kitson is the best stand-up comedian in the UK, bar none.

He chooses not to appear on TV and prefers to concentrate on his stand-up career and his short-story writing.

reply

Peter Kay doesn't do stand up, he reminisces with the audience.

"do you remember...*insert pop culture reference* they were good"

reply

I used to work with Dan Kitson's aunt and she told me the reason Kitson hates Peter Kay so much is because he thinks Kay is a hypocrite.
Apparantly, Kitson didn't like the fact Kay appeared in an advert for John Smith's after his father had died of alcoholism.
I also noticed that during an evening dedicated to Peter Kay, which featured every episode of Phoenix Nights back-to-back, that Kitson's faced had been fuzzed out and his voice dubbed! Also, his name didn't appear in the credits. It's obvious the pair have had a number of arguments after the show became a success. Maybe Kitson was annoyed "artistically" because the show ended up being a mainstream hit.
I've never seen Kitson perform live, though I've heard he's extremely good. Personally, I wasn't very impressed by his performances in Phoenix Nights. In the second series especially, I thought the scenes he was involved in were fairly weak.

I noticed that too. Didn't notice the voice thing, but certainly noticed the face-fuzzing. I wasn't a fan of the Spencer scenes either, they weren't all that useful or engaging for the most part in my opinion. Many of them seemed to be "Spencer stands behind the bar polishing a glass" *shrugs*

Maybe Peter Kay ' ruined ' Spencer as a character and he didnt turn out as planned. I think to be fair, he's one of those characters with a huge amount of potential that hasnt been fully realised yet.

Also, as much as i rate Peter Kay as being a comedy genius, he does come across now as being an egotistical maniac, someone whose whims and needs have to be pandered to or else and maybe Daniel Kitson just was not prepared to give in to this.

If rumours are to be believed that he has succeeded in alienating Dave Spikey now, it is obvious that the problem lies with Peter Kay.

Also, in his comentaries why does Peter Kay show disdain toward The Office?

reply

Very possibly. The character probably wasn't used to his full potential, and maybe that's why I don't rate the character -- we may never know.

I'm not sure about the 'alienating Dave Spikey' thing. I was at his 'Audience with' earlier this month and the question was asked. He didn't come across (to me anyway but I can be a really bad judge of character sometimes) as having been alienated and went so far as to imply he was very supportive of Peter *shrugs*.

I know 'supportive' doesn't necessarily equal 'not been alienated' but he didn't seem to bear him any ill will. Unless it was lip service. I suppose, as a professional, Dave isn't going to say "Peter is an egotistical b******!!"

Peter Kay is a sell out and hogs all the praise that Phoenix nights got. He went on to prove in Max & Paddy that he wasn't the comedy genius he had people believe him to be.

Channel 4 havent picked up a second series of Max & Paddy. He's written a third series of Phoenix Nights on his own. I doubt that's up to much. I love Phoenix Nights, love Peter Kay in it.

Daniel Kitson i don't know much about him to criticise him for his views on Peter Kay, but i share some of them.

Peter Kay uses any excuse to get his face in there somewhere, just notice the comic relief video..all comedy performers donate their time for free, and contribute sketches for free as well. But the only sketch of the night that had credits was his. "WRITTEN BY PETER KAY" "DIRECTED BY PETER KAY". It's pretty shameful if you ask me.

Peter Kay hasn't done anything funny since at least 2003. I think that was his last stand up show. Correct me if i'm wrong. But 4 years of just gatecrashing pop concerts to introduce The Kaiser Chiefs in the same vein as his "hilarious" catchphrase, Kaiser.......Chiefs...... (Garlic Bread).

That's not comic genius, it's someone whose milking their 15minutes of fame off the back of backstabbing two very funny writers in Spikey & Fitzmaurice.

Is Kay a dedicated performer? Yes. Is he doing a lot of things for the money?God yes.

It's shameful how your comedy heroes end up.

reply

Well said contom. i couldn't agree more.

Im very interested reading this all, but no one has mentioned that Peter Kay isnt doing much stuff these days because he's got very young kids.
Also im curious how grounded these claims that Kay and Spikey have fallen out. While I agree Peter hasnt been as active as he once was, its cruel to portray him as a greedy wash out even if him and Daniel Kitson have had disputes in the past.
Also no tv personality maintains a constant good string of shows throughout their career, are French and Saunders or Lenny Henry as good as they once were?
No, because new forms of comedy are always being developed.
I think these swipes against Kay are petty. If you dont like what he's doing now, watch someone else. Kay isnt meant to be christ incarnate, theres no point portraying him as falling from grace.

reply

Me and my family used to agree that Peter Kay was a genius (His first two standup DVD's, Peter Kay thing, Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy were all excellent) but now hes become such a sell-out, egotistical maniac its unbelieveable. He always appears very down to earth when hes interviewed but look at hiswebsite, just one big front for advertising tacky t-shirts and mugs. He did adverts for asda and made a Max and Paddy workout DVD! (seriously wtf) now hes fallen out with his long time partner, Dave Spikey, without hium peter kay is nothing and he knows it. Kay hasnt done any new standup or series and keeps milking the same material over and over again while Spikey and the like come up with original material for shows like '8 out of 10 cats' its only a matter fo time until the british public realise that.

Sorry, that was a bit fo a rant!
