Was it possible that Prot was a way of his mind dealing with a tremendous torment within him?

The story hints at that, or perhaps he was just being devious the whole time.

Hints? It clearly states this with the hypnosis scene.

reply

In a way, yes. I think Prot was really an alien who only "possessed" the bodies of catatonics like Robert Porter and Bess with their consent. So, yes, Robert allowing prot to inhabit his body and was a way of dealing with the trauma he suffered.

Porter found his family murdered and he killed the culprit who was still there.

Prot back on K-Pax felt Porter’s pain and anguish ( having possessed his body other times when visiting he was in some way connected with him)

Prot understood that something terrible had happened to Porter and he needed help.

Porter went to the river to commit suicide and Prot just arrived in time to take possession of Porter’s body and save him..

Since the murder Prot has been in control of Porter’s body.

When the shrink is talking about Prot at the end of the film Porter smiles .. I think this confirms that Porter was aware that now and then an entity/ Prot took possession of his body.

I m not sure though if Porter was aware of what Prot said and did during that time, though?

reply

Yes, I think he was fully aware of all that happened. I think Porter essentially became like a passenger along for the ride while Prot was driving the car.

reply

Yeah..this is sort of the entire point of the film. It begs the question...is Prot a coping mechanism, or is he actually an alien?
