Slang terms for rank

Does anyone remember exactly what the corresponding slang term for each military rank was (as mentioned in the film)?

For example, I remember that the inmates used the term 'pal' for those who had been privates prior to incarceration.

To that end, does anyone know if this system, or one like it, is actually used anywhere or for any purpose?

IIRC, they referred to the General as Chief, and the Senior NCOs as Boss.

I found a copy of the script online...here's the dialog explaining the substitute rank system.

They're calling Irwin "chief." That's the word they got for general.

They got substitute names for the other ranks, too, sir.

Anybody who was a captain is "boss." Sergeants are "sport," privates are "pal."

Good luck & hope that helps!

I don't know how everyone else feels but I've always liked this movie and I am NOT a Redford fan. Really underrated flick.
