Buffest mathematician ever?
I reckon Crowe could possibly be the buffest (most muscular) mathematician in the history of the field. That scene in the classroom where he's wearing a white t-shirt: the man's built like a rugby player!

I noticed that too. Took away from the realism of the movie
shareYep, his brawny build totally killed the scene. A mathematician, let alone a non-athlete in the 1940s, wouldn't have a robust build. They'll either be skinny or chubby, but most of the time skinny. Above all, John Nash had a slender built. Crowe looked nothing like that. They should've made him lose some of that muscle for a slimmer build - Crowe is very tall, he could've pulled a lanky look.
Anyway, I personally wasn't really that fond of Crowe in this. Not only he didn't resemble Nash and had an unsuited body type, he seemed miscast for me. He's too "tough" looking for a role like that. They should've tried Matt Damon, as the guy sort of resembles young Nash, and he had a slim build back in 2001. Ewan McGregor would've been good too (acting ability wise, since Damon was still improving in those days).
I didn't think it took away from the film.
While I agree that most teachers I've known are pot-bellied fatsos, I've seen a few that clearly work out!
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.
I took a class in macroeconomics once and one of the teachers was actually way buffer than that.
But I don't really think all that muscle really fit with the character of Nash. Would he really spend that much time working out?
I assume you took your macroeconomics class way after the 1940s. Back then, it was not in vogue to be muscular. People in general thought that building any noticeable amount of muscle was freakish and unhealthy. Now we know better.
shareUnfortunately athletes don't live any longer so the jury is still out on whether it is "healthy" or not. The heart has to work hard the more mass it has to push the blood through whether it is muscle or fat. Has more to do with diet and a restricted calorie diet has been shown to lead to longevity and lack of illness partly because of the concept of autophagy. They discovered that during the great depression.
shareExercise for the heart is good for it. We do know that it reduces the risk of healrt diseases. But you are right that the diet that tends to come in hand with muscle builders is the more important part of the equation.
shareI think Russell was good in the role, but I don't think he looked young enough to play a college student.
shareThe actual John Nash was very buff as a young man. People assumed Russell Crowe hadn't yet lost the muscle mass he built up for "Gladiator" but he was portraying a person with a powerful build in "A Beautiful Mind."
