Why don't Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movies ever have high rating on IMDB?

I ask again, why do many very good fantasy movies or sci-fi movies have low rating on this website?

This movie got a 5.6, Now i thought this movie was wonderful. Sure it had a plot hole here and there and many ppl yell and argue at what is and isnt true or possible. But this movie was really entertaining and imaginative and deserves better than a 5.6. With movies like Bolt and Up getting high 8's and 9's i think its getting ridiculous. This movie along with more sci-fi movies deserve more recognition.

Does anyone else agree?

I think this movie is pretty awesome, worth *at least* a 7.
Anyway, I did rated it a 10 just to compensate for the underrating.

Your assertion does not stand up to scrutiny.... (28/250 or >10% of the total of the highest rated films)

IMDB250 as at 16/3/2016:

The Dark Knight (debatable sci-fi)
The Lord of the Rings (fantasty - kinda sci-fi)
Star Wars V
Inception
Two Towers (fantasy again)
The Matrix
Star Wars IV
Interstellar
Terminator 2
Back to the Future
Memento (Hmmm)
Alien
The Dark Knight Rises (hmmm)
Star Wars VI
A Clockwork Orange (dystopian future)
Star Wars VII
2001
Metropolis
Batman Begins (hmmm)
Pan's Labyrinth (fantasy)
Blade Runner
V for Vendetta (dystopian future)
Mad Max Fury Road (dysopian future)
Terminator
Twelve Monkeys
The Martian
Guardians of the Galaxy
Akira

This terrible remake doesn't deserve a high rating.

They do. When they are good. This one isnt though. Its nowhere even close to the 1960 version and that one wasnt perfect either. This one is just a trope on top of a trope and lots of unbelievable plotholes.

I think because too many people now-days expect all movies to be super intelligent and super realistic. When an element like time-travel is introduced and the technical details of it are just that you get a machine to turn a clock backwards most people scoff at it and toss it off as being silly or over simplified. I love Sci-Fi films especially ones with the time travel element in them, that and space travel. I always have and I am not a mathematically inclined or scientificly knowledgeable person.

Because a lot of them aren't very good. This movie in particular has an endless onslaught of flaws, notably the vast differences from the original novel, dumb characters, pointless action scenes, that scene where Orlando Jones breaks the fourth wall, pointless action scenes, pointless action scenes, and pointless action scenes. The only great part of the movie is when Guy Pearce and the Uber Morlock have a down-to-earth discussion about time and its principles, but it suddenly turns into a pointless action scene for literally no reason.
