Opinions -- I Really Liked It

This one really surprised me. I thought the film was very good! I gave it a 9 only b/c it was a little predictable. It really captures a lot of emotions and why people do what they do and the excuses they make for it--all the characters. The movie just seemed to flow as well--no needless dialogue or scenes. Concise, yet deep. The casting was great as well IMHO. Everything about the film was really well done! In the end, life does always come down to self-respect.

I think the performances truly made this film. In particular, Mick Jagger and James Garner, as the aging kings of their respective professions suddenly sliding into obsolescence, gave brilliant performances. I loved the scene where James Garner slapped Andy Garcia after his frank appraisal of his Roman novel. It seemed as if he recognized his own failure, but was unable to berate himself, needing that external criticism to give him a target for his frustration. Excellent.

You mean James Coburn.

It's funny, I've just finished watching the movie, rated it 9/10 then read your post, and your post really (don't know if this is only a swedish expression...) "putted the dot over the letter "i" " Meaning your sumery was exellent.

I was at the movie-rental store...was looking thrue movies, saw this one..."The Escort - Swedish title...read the back, thought...a well I'll give it a try. This was really my kind of movie. Glad I chosed it, made my evening.

It's interesting to see a post from 2003 on this board. So, almost nine years later: Does your movie rental store still exist?

Most video stores around me have closed, but movie are so cheap these days I just buy them for the price of a rental. I'm happy to have this in my collection – an entertaining, intriguing drama for grown-ups.

I saw this movie in the theater after seeing a discussion/review on TV. Mick Jagger and Garcia were a draw as well. It's always had a memorable place for me. I just watched it again for the 4th or 5th time, since then. It's still a good movie, though I will agree the score is a bit sappy and cliche. I used to like Andy Garcia a lot, but having watched Godfather 3 again recently, I have to say he's a bit overrated. He definitely has a good look and is good at times, but other times he overracts or is out of his element, but he doesn't ruin the film, but I definitely took more note of him this time. His reading of the novel at the end is touching to his credit.

Mick Jagger was excellent and his delivery of his cutting lines was perfect. Both those guys need better fitting suits and pants though (so baggy). In Mick's case, I guess a matter of being tiny. Olivia and Coburn are also great, as well as the other main characters.
