Quote "We're asking to go in and set-up a perimeter .."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/quotes
In the Quotes page:

General Garrison: This is Garrison. Now I want to be sure y'all understand what your asking for, so say it out loud and clear.
Shughart: We're asking to go in and set-up a perimeter until ground support arrives.

I thought that was Gordon, not Shughart. I remember it was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who answered in that scene.

reply

This question is moot because in the real battle neither Shughart nor Gordon spoke directly to General Garrison for permission of insertion on the Durant Super 64 crash site.

In real life it was a discussion between them and pilot Mike Gofenna in Super 62 and the Air and Ground Colonels (Mathews and Harrell) in the C2 Black Hawk circling overhead for permission.

The question is not moot. He's asking about the movie. Not real life.

There is, unseen by most, an underworld...a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit...

reply

Yeah and I'm educating him that the movie is incorrect so what does it matter if it was Shughart or Gordon who never IRL spoke to General Garrison?!

To answer the question yes the Quotes page is incorrect. In the movie it is Gordon who says: "We're asking to go in and set-up a perimeter until ground support arrives." not Shughart.

Everyone happy geez 

If you know the real story so well you can contribute to the Trivia section.

It matters because yes, the movie changes thing. If he wanted to know what happened in real life, he'd ask. Or read the book. It's an interesting tidbit, but unrelated to the question at hand.

Movie80 would never have known that in the real battle neither Shughart nor Gordon spoke directly to General Garrison unless I volunteered that information. As for updating the Trivia section, I'll leave that for other more motivated posters.

In the movie BOTH Delta snipers spoke to General Garrison even if it was Shughart simply saying: "Roger that". So now I've answered your movie question who is going to update the Quotes section?

How about another tidbit for the Trivia section while you're updating it, Sgt Eversmann never had nor threw a IR Strobe onto the building roof nor did he have direct communications with the AH-6 Little Bird pilots prior to their gun run of the Somalis on the rooftops.

Why IRL would they never speak directly to the general? Is it forbidden or what?

reply

You have a chain of command for a reason, Garrison was a few steps up on the flag pole from the guys on the ground so they streamline communication through different channels that flow up.

In this situation, there was a communication helicopter that flew over the battle and relayed all the info from the ground leaders (and pilots) to the command center. Even if the General was the greatest battle tactician ever who had every soldier, pilot, ranger, etc. on speed dial it would be utter chaos and impossible to communicate with so many working parts.

The OP thinks this movie has no plot? Then he wouldn’t recognize a plot if it kicked him in the balls.
